Constructing a life for oneself necessitates creating boundaries between personal experience and that of others. The need to make one’s mark on this world can b reed a psychological state of ‘otherness’, to be distinct and separate and often to feel as if one is rising above and beyond the communal experience. Meaghan Haughian’s new series pieces together her own experiences and lessons, with an aim towards self disclosure, and also to disarm the constructed notions of self versus other. Her soft muted colouration and amalgamation of varying techniques and mediums uncover a personal that is not as distinct as we have been socially trained to believe. As Haughian throws open the doors to her inner world, the viewer is forced to realize that the idea of collective experience is not merely contained to publicly shared experiences, but can also reference the psychologically shared attributes that we all possess as humans.

Artist Statement:
"This exhibition marks a new direction in my use of materials. Objects have inserted themselves into my familiar vocabulary of painting, drawing, photography and text. Enclosed by dresser drawers, these collages extend beyond the page into your space and mine. I remain interested in capturing the experiences and emotions that we share together as human beings but often experience in isolation. Watershed continues with this questioning and reflection. Piecing together often conflicting imagery and ideas, I search for connections between life’s dualities: interior and exterior, private and public, humour and grief, love and disdain, natural and domestic environments. These drawers recount parables or “notes to self” – personal mementos and essential life lessons we often forget or disregard. Introverted and sheltered, they are rooms that merge make-believe with reality and autobiography with collective human experience. But like a book that accepts continual disclosure, these drawers remain open, reaching out."-Meaghan Haughian, 2010
