"Midwest Paint Group : The Figure including works by Tim King and Philip Hale"

The traveling exhibition titled “The Figure”, featuring drawings and paintings from the human figure by the Midwest Paint Group and guests, opened at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City on November 5. An essay for the exhibit was written by Lance Esplund, art critic for The Wall Street Journal, senior art critic for City Arts, and the former chief art critic of the New York Sun. Esplund explains in his essay that the painters of the Midwest Paint Group “take into account that more than a century ago Cubism and Fauvism led to abstraction. These artists have absorbed those innovations and, without turning their backs on the figure, continue to further the tradition of painting. They generally work in traditional genres. They recognize that the art of the past is alive and well—that age-old subjects (the landscape, the nude, or a few objects on a table) are as inspirational and meaningful today, as vital and viable a source for painting, as they ever were”. The Midwest Paint Group is Bob Brock, Glen Cebulash, Philip Hale, Timothy King, Jeremy Long,
Michael Neary, Ron Weaver, and Megan Williamson. Guest artists are Martha Armstrong, Stanley Lewis, Wilbur Niewald, George Rose, Michael Walling, and the late Masters Leland Bell and Lester Goldman.
“The Figure” is on exhibit at Leedy -Voulkos Art Center, at 2010 Baltimore Ave., Kansas City, MO 64108 through January 28. Next stop is at Alexandre Hogue Gallery at the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma beginning March 3 through 31, 2011. The final showing is at Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY beginning September 8 – October 16, 2011.
