The Tricycle Gallery launches Look Closer, its first visual arts commission, from the London-based artist K Yoland. Taking place in two halves the exhibition explores the richness and diversity of Kilburn expressed through the people and architecture that defines the area. Working with local community groups ranging from youth clubs and basketball teams to sea cadets and boxers, Yoland has created a rich and significant social study of the area, celebrating its richness and diversity through a unique artist-led approach. Her commission navigates the grey areas between performance, portraiture and documentary photography, creating a powerful and engaging series of images that connect to wider dialogues around youth representation and the influence of media whilst capturing the fundamental essence of Kilburn life.

The two-part exhibition will be hosted at the Tricycle Gallery with a video presented off-site in a pop up space located at 288 Kilburn High Road. The first part of the exhibition will focus o n the themes of architecture and place within the area, explored through a series of large-scale panoramic images. Part two will look at notions of identity and the significance of social groups and teams. This will unpack ideas of intimacy and the relationship between subject and camera whilst equally questioning the role of the artist within socially engaged practice.
