The Exhibit “Rhythms and Strokes” runs from November 11, 2010 through March 11, 2011 at The College of Charleston, Avery Research Center. The exhibition presents works by Hampton Olfus who has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absoltuearts.com since 2008. From his artist statement Hampton Olfus comments, "The art that I’m presenting to the viewer in this exhibit is structured by media, and theme. I’ve included some new pen and ink drawings, and acrylic paintings that I have completed during 2008 - 2010. I’m an artist who’s creative process is influenced by, breaking rules. This is the first exhibit I have done without an eclectic display, of my work. I decided to conform,
finally to the sensibilities of the established exhibit of continuity. I have over the years intentionally ignored the notion, that when the artist, presents too many different styles and techniques, or media, the viewer will
leave the exhibit feeling confused."
Olfus continues, "I have always felt, that an artist should be true to his, or her artistic direction in the moment of creating the art, and present it as such. I’m not saying that, exhibits based on thematic continuity, are not driven by an artistic direction, I’m sure they are. What
I’m saying is that, I want to invite the joy of the creative process, into a structured controlled process, which is the exhibit. I find that some of my favorite moments come from an improvisational approach, while creating works
of art. For me each medium, has a different range of expressing the theme. This presentation was challenging and helped me to find joy in something I
felt would bore me to pieces. I hope you, the viewer enjoy this presentation, and not be confused by it."
