Imagining the Past in France,
1250–1500
November 16, 2010–February 6,
2011
The Getty
Center
This major new exhibition explores one of the greatest chapters in the history
of French art and the development of the French nation. In medieval France,
monarchs and nobles employed the finest artists of the day to paint the heroic
tales of bygone eras on the pages of lavish books. These illustrations helped
the French understand their present and plan their future by celebrating an epic
past.
Bringing together masterpieces of manuscript illumination from more than 25 of
the world's finest museums and libraries, the exhibition features beautiful
portrayals of dramatic moral dilemmas, valiant battles, and chivalrous
derring-do.

Youth
Through April 19,
2011
The Getty
Villa
The Agrigento Youth, one of the masterpieces of the Museo Archeologico
Regionale di Agrigento in Sicily, is on temporary view at the Getty Villa. A
rare example of a kouros, or idealized nude young man, the sculpture was carved
by an anonymous artist during the early classical period, about 480
B.C.
The loan is part of a long-term collaboration between the Getty Museum and the
Sicilian Ministry of Culture and Sicilian
Identity.

Conservation and Management of the Tomb of Tutankhamen
The discovery by Howard Carter in 1922 of the tomb of Tutankhamen and its
spectacular funerary treasure created a sensation. Concerns about the tomb's
condition recently led Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities to invite the
Getty Conservation Institute to undertake a five-year partnership to conserve
and manage the
site.
