November Exhibitions at Causey Contemporary
Brooklyn, NY
September 2010 - Causey Contemporary is pleased to announce their November
exhibitions: Freshly Minted Triggers featuring the steel sculptures
of Arthur Mednick, and Homer Yost: Drawings of Maria Gracia y Navit
Yolainne. These two exhibitions will be the second solo show for
Arthur Mednick and the fourth solo show for Homer Yost with the gallery.
Both exhibitions will run from November 19 - December 12, 2010 with an opening
reception on November 19 from 6 - 9 p.m. Followed by an artists talk with both
artists on December 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Freshly Minted Triggers is the most recent installment of
wall mounted steel sculptures by New York based artist Arthur Mednick.
These latest fugitives from the mind of Mednick significantly
expand the scope of his work. Cross genre, cross style, cross type; this
show is a wide-ranging riff of cascading influences. Alternating between
figurative and abstract, elaborate and reductive, the work is installed to
capitalize on the peculiar associations and rhythms set up by these intimate
strangers.
From the heavy mass of
"Fortunato's Last Brick" to the fuzzed out "Buck's Haircut", literary allusions,
cool calculations, warm sentiments and animating notes are assembled in this
extraordinarily grouped composition. Titles are used as reference points
alternating between the cryptic and the evident, inviting speculation and
connecting individual pieces into larger themes.
Infused with his soft sensual approach to steel these works show Mednick
at his finest; extracting from deep in the groove.
Similar wall mounted sculptures of his have appeared in solo
exhibitions in New York, Philadelphia, and Berlin, Germany. They
have also been included in such exhibitions as Mathematical Instinct at the
Tweed Museum and Welded! Sculpture of the Twentieth Century at the Nueberger
Museum. Arthur counts playwright Edward Albee and PayPal cofounder,
Elon Musk among his many prominent collectors.
Drawings:
Maria Gracia y Navit Yolainne marks the first time artist Homer Yost
has exclusively exhibited his drawings. Ordinarily he exhibits his sculptures
with the occasional drawing included in the show. He says that when
Causey Contemporary director, Tracy Causey-Jeffery first asked him to do a
drawing exhibition, he felt like he had
been asked to take a long vacation
on a remote island and do nothing but snorkeling. His drawings come from a
highly collaborative process of working with models in this case Maria-Gracia
Pendreanez and Navit Yolainne Mena. The drawings included in the
exhibition are the direct result of imagery created through movement, silence
and
sometimes dialogue. Homer has been drawing and sculpting
for thirty years. In 1993 he was one of the sculptors who restored
the Freedom Statue on the Capital Building in D.C. In 2006, he
documented in bas relief the destruction and survivors post hurricane Katrina in
Biloxi Mississippi. Homer's sculptures and drawings have appeared in
solo and group exhibitions throughout the USA, England and Italy.
Both Arthur Mednick and Homer Yost will speak about their work, its
process and its inspiration in back to back artists talks on December 10 at 7:30
p.m. at Causey Contemporary. The public is invited to attend the talks as
well as the opening reception of both exhibitions on November 19th from 6-9 p.m.
