Jancar Jones Gallery is pleased to
announce, Mirror 5, an installation of four paintings and a perfume
by San Francisco-based artist Bruno Fazzolari. In his work, Fazzolari
investigates the ambiguity and uncertainty of perception by exploring the
interstice between abstraction, symbol and representation. Marks and shapes
allude to symbolic systems such as written and graphic language and musical
notation. Pictorial spaces and images are invoked but remain at the threshold
of intellectual [UTF-8?]resolution.
 [UTF-8?]
The Mirror 5
paintings deploy a
vocabulary of gestural mark-making to explore the same space from several
perspectives, as though in cross section; the dashed-lines of their blue
borders recall the vernacular of printed maps. Taken together, the
paintings describe a fifth [UTF-8?]“painting” or idealized space, which is
not
tangible but meant to be
imagined.
While the fifth [UTF-8?]“painting” exists
only
in the mind of the viewer, the perfume is intended to be available as an
accompaniment to the work on canvas. Formulated by the artist, the
fragrance is a variation on Eau de Cologne, traditionally unisex,
and one of the oldest perfume accords. It has long-standing associations
with wakefulness and cleanliness. The most vibrant part of this accord is
highly ephemeral. Shortly after leaving the gallery, the brightest notes
will be gone, though the [UTF-8?]“dry-down” will remain. Viewers will leave
with a fragment of the scent, and a trace of the paintings, both material and
immaterial. The fragrance will be available for personal application while
viewing and in bottles as an open
edition.
Bruno Fazzolari has shown with Feature,
Inc. in New York, Gallery Paule Anglim and Gallery 16 in San Francisco and
Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles. His work has been included in shows at
the M.H. de Young Museum, San Francisco and the Katonah Museum of Art,
Katonah, NY. He earned an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute after
graduating from U.C. Berkeley in Comparative Literature. He is an active
critic and interviewer in the Bay Area and is currently a lecturer at the
California College of the Arts, San
Francisco.
