What does “Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman”, “Ben-hur”, and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” have in common?
Their iconic movie posters were all illustrated by one man, Reynold Brown.
The Illustrated Press’s Daniel Zimmer and David J. Hornung have recently published an art book about Reynold Brown called REYNOLD BROWN: A LIFE IN PICTURES. This book is a rich overview of Reynold Brown’s career; presenting hundreds of iconic paintings, drawings, photographs and printed illustrations in full-page reproductions.
Reynold Brown’s career started during WWII, working at North American Aviation where he invented the “cutaway” drawing for airplanes. After the war, he transitioned to illustration for advertisements and magazines like: Argosy, Popular Science, Saturday Evening Post, Boy’s Life, and Popular Aviation.
His movie poster career covered some of the most recognizable films of the 20th century:
- Creature of the Black Lagoon
- The Incredible Shrinking Man
- Tarantula (film)
- This Island Earth
- I was a Teenage Werewolf
- Man of a Thousand Faces
- Attack of the 50 Foot Woman
- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
- The Land Unknown
- Ben-Hur (1959 film)
- The Atomic Submarine
- Spartacus
- The Alamo
- The Time Machine
- King of Kings
- How the West Was Won
- Mutiny on the Bounty
- Shenandoah
REYNOLD BROWN: A LIFE IN PICTURES represents the growing interest in the work of illustrators from the 1950s and 60s. Reynold’s work has been collected and studied by many, his painting of The Alamo hung at the real Alamo for many years and his original Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman was recently acquired by the Pompidou Centre in Paris. His work is the art which continues to inspire young artists, his work is referenced by pop culture, from performances to paraphernalia, it is time that such a humble artist is recognized as the force he really was.
