September Update from The New England Quilt Museum
Red Sox Quilt eBay Auction-Now Through September 25

Don't miss your chance to bid on the New England Quilt Museum Red Sox quilt! The quilt, containing a center panel signed by 24 of the 2009 Red Sox team, including Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek, Jonathan Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, J.D. Drew, and Josh Beckett, as well as President and CEO Larry Lucchino, is being auctioned on eBay to benefit the museum. The panel was generously donated by the Red Sox Foundation in response to a request by the museum. The autographed fabric was then made into a quilt by nationally-renowned quilt artist Rosemary Bawn, who is known nationwide for her pictorial Red Sox works.

Featuring a panorama of Fenway Park, the piece was hand-quilted by the artist. Measuring 54” by 40”, the work took a total of 175 hours to complete. It incorporates fabrics that are reproductions from a quilt soon to be exhibited at the museum in the Master Pieces exhibition, made around 1910, with early 20th century baseball players depicted in the fabric.

For a complete list of players whose signatures are featured on the quilt, click here.

To bid on the quilt, visit http://bit.ly/4CVHI, or visit eBay.com and type in "Quilt Museum Red Sox Quilt" in the upper left-hand corner. Hurry and bid--the auction ends September 25!

Opening Reception for Master Pieces: Haberdashery Textiles in Antique Quilts

September 26, 1pm

Portrait quilt, maker unknown, made from neckties, with painted center panel. Mid 20th century.

Featuring quilts made from menswear, some of it recycled clothing, this remarkable exhibition brings together over 40 intriguing graphic works made from simple utilitarian fabrics long overlooked in the study of antique quilts. The guest curator for the exhibit is noted antiques dealer and author Laura Fisher of FISHERHERITAGE in New York City.

The antique quilts on exhibit are made of menswear fabrics recycled from suits and shirts, neckties, pajamas, military uniforms, work clothes—even woolen underwear and socks. Popular for about a century, these quilts are compelling and often whimsical. Simple squares arranged in a diagonal pattern prove on close inspection to be made from scraps of patterned jersey socks. A shimmering kaleidoscope of diamonds in rust reds and yellows is pieced from 1950s neckties. Visually stunning and strikingly modern, these antique textiles make distinct graphic statements out of the most everyday materials.

In addition to the quilts themselves, the exhibit will feature historic advertisements, swatch books, and catalogs from menswear companies, dating from the 1900s through the 1950s.

The tradition of making unique, often very personal quilts from repurposed menswear textiles gained popularity around 1850, and lasted through the 1950s. Today, the tradition revives in memory quilts made from old T-shirts and clothing that has personal sentiment. During Lowell Open Studios, on Sunday, September 27, we will be honoring this new tradition with a T-shirt memory quilt demo (more information below).

Laura Fisher will be speaking about the exhibition's content at the opening reception on September 26. In addition, on October 17, historic textiles expert Pam Weeks will deliver a lecture about textile production in New England mills, a concise 210-year history of every textile manufactured in New England. Through case histories of natural and manufactured fibers, Pam documents the rise and fall of our textile heritage.

Support for this exhibition is provided in part by Brooks Brothers and P&B Textiles. The opening reception is sponsored by Schoolhouse Quilters. Our “American Pastimes” reproduction prints from Marcus Fabrics were inspired by one of the quilts in the exhibition and are currently available in the Museum shop, with proceeds to benefit the museum.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the New England Quilt Museum is featuring an exhibit of bras and quilts made by, for, or in memory of women with breast cancer. Both the bras and the quilts were designed and made by museum members, members of the Nimble Thimblers Quilt Guild, Reading, and other women from the greater Lowell area. The bras and quilts, both poignant and whimsical, will be on display in the Museum throughout the month of October.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the museum will also be hosting an awareness event the first day of the exhibit. The museum is again partnering with Lowell General Hospital for a lecture on Thursday, October 1, 2009. Meg Lemire, director of oncology social work and community outreach, along with hospital staff, will highlight the importance of screening and new treatments available for breast cancer. The Museum’s Outreach Manager, Rhonda Galpern, coordinated the exhibition and lecture as a means to pay tribute to members of the museum and quilting community who are or have battled the disease, promote awareness, and offer cancer survivors a comforting creative means of expressing their personal experiences.
