Claudia Calirman has been named Principal
Curator, and Jovana StokiÄ has been named curator of the AbramoviÄ Studio,
Location One announced today.
They head a distinguished team of visiting and resident curators taking part in
Location One's programs of artistic experimentation, exhibition and performance in
the 2009-10 program year.
As Principal Curator, Claudia Calirman will take part in the artistic direction of all
Location One's exhibition and performance programs, and will work closely with
senior artist-in-residence Carolee Schneemann, international fellows Richard Bell
and Lucy Skaer, and the artists in Location One's residency and other programs. A
specialist in modern, contemporary and Latin American art, she is a Visiting Scholar
at Harvard's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. She teaches and
lectures at The Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum. She reviews
art for Art Nexus, Art in America and Arte el Dia, and has curated two exhibitions at
Lehman College Art Gallery. Her book on "Brazilian art under Dictatorship: 1968-74"
is forthcoming from Duke University Press. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from
The City University of New York.
The AbramoviÄ Studio, created by renowned visual and performance artist Marina
AbramoviÄ, will enable artists to experiment with the forms of performative
expression to which she has contributed so greatly. Jovana StokiÄ is a Belgrade-born, New York-based art historian and critic who has curated thematic exhibitions
and performance events in the US, Italy, Spain and Serbia. She holds a Ph.D from
NYU's Institute of Fine Arts, and has written on notions of self-representation and
beauty in the works of AbramoviÄ, Martha Rosler and Joan Jonas. She has been a fellow at the New Museum, a researcher at the Whitney Museum, and the curator of
NYU's Kimmel Center Galleries.
"As our artists explore new directions in their creative expression, the best curators
can be catalysts for innovation, guides to critical thinking, and resources for the
fundamentals of exhibition and performance," said Claire Montgomery, executive
director of Location One. "We are pleased and honored that Claudia and Jovana will
be taking leadership roles in working with the exciting group of artists chosen for
this year's programs."
Other members of the Location One curatorial team include:
Maura Reilly, former curator of the Brooklyn Museum's Sackler Center, and curator
of Location One's landmark 25-year retrospective of the works of Nayland Blake.
She will curate "I Am Not Sorry," opening at Location One in October, the first U.S.
exhibition by Richard Bell, Australia's foremost aboriginal artist.
Heather Wagner, a member of the Location One management team who specializes
in digital expression and artistic collaboration, who has curated three exhibitions at
Location One, most recently the current "Virtual Residency 2.0" exhibition, the
culmination of a four-artist, three-continent creative interaction.

the structure and content of both broad programs and specific events, include:
Pieranna Cavalchini, curator of contemporary art at Boston's Isabella Stewart
Gardner Museum; Eric Shiner, Milton Fine curator at Pittsburgh's Andy Warhol
Museum; Marcia Vetrocq, editor of Art in America magazine; Aileen Corkery, UK-
