Transitional justice is the term formulated by legal scholar Ruti
Teitel for tribunal processes which investigate the illegality of an
overthrown system. The international hearings, commissions and show
trials that originate from the tribunal have always demonstrated an
affinity with the moving image because they depend on a public
audience for their existence; the presence of cameras has already been
written into their mise en scene. This conversation between Eyal Sivan
and The Otolith Group takes Sivan's research into the representation
of the politics of memory as a point of departure for an exploration
of rarely seen works by Marcel Ophuls, Costa Gavras, Claude Lanzmann
and others.

Eyal Sivan is a London based filmmaker, producer and essayist and is
currently Reader in Media Production at the School of Humanities and
Social Sciences at the University of East London (UEL). Sivan directed
more then 10 worldwide awarded feature-length political documentaries
and produced many others. He is the founder and Chief Editor of
'Cinema South Notebooks' in Israel - a journal of cinema and political
critique, member of the editorial board of the Paris based publishing
house 'La Fabrique' and member of the editorial board and columnist at
the French social studies journal 'De l'autre Côté'. Among Sivan's
films are 'Aqabat-Jaber, Passing Through' (1987), 'Izkor: Slaves of
Memory' (1991), 'Itsembatsemba, Rwanda One Genocide Later' (1996),
'The Specialist' (1996), 'Route 181: Fragments of a Journey in
Palestine-Israel' (2003), 'I Love You All/Aus liebe zum Volk' (2004),
'Faces of the Fallen' (2006) and 'Jaffa, The Orange Clockwork' (2009).

The Otolith Group was formed in 2002 by London artists Kodwo Eshun and
Anjalika Sagar. Their works have been exhibited in museums and
biennials worldwide including Tate Britain and The Hayward, London,
The International Centre of Photography, New York and Documenta 12.
They are the curators and editors of the exhibition and publication
'The Ghosts of Songs: The Film Art of The Black Audio Collective', and
are co-curators of 'Three Early Films: Harun Farocki' at Cubitt (2009)
and 'Against What? Against Whom?' (2009) in collaboration with Tate
Modern and Raven Row (2009). The Otolith Trilogy (2003-2009) was
presented at 'A Long Time Between Suns Part l and ll', their two part
exhibition, at Gasworks and The Showroom, London, 2009.
