Zhao Kailin New Paintings at Mandarin Fine Art Gallery
From the Director
September 2009
We are so thrilled to receive five new paintings by our most valued artist Zhao Kailin. Each of those paintings tells a different story, a story mixed with the past, the present and the future, from faraway China...
The Memory of My Youth

Memory of My Youth     oil on linen    50x58"       $74,000

Looking at a Zhao Kailin's painting sometimes is like looking at fire. It transfixes us; we freeze for a moment, we can't move away. When we do finally walk away, something inside of us arises or changes, a feeling - we feel purer, nobler, more peaceful; we feel tenderer, gentler, more alive; we feel the stir of love.
Kailin's new master piece Memory of My Youth does just that. The young girl's gentle but longing gaze instantly engages us. We can't walk away. We stand there wondering what she is thinking and feeling. Is she happy or sad? She is magnificently and elaborately dressed, what is she waiting for? Some important occasion or event? How is it going to change her life? For better or for worse? Is her fate in her delicate little hands? She sits self-contained and with peace. Is it because she is hopeful for her future or she has decided to submit to something bigger than her?
This beautiful little thing at flowering age, so young that she still has a little doll next her, is surrounded by the elegant but confining traditions. What became of her? Did her life blossom into something magnificent and remarkable as her beauty and her attires; or was she diminished and perished as so many beautiful youth because of others' covetousness, manipulation and cruelty?
When she recalls the memory of her youth at this one moment in time as in the painting, did it make her smile or cry?
Story of China

An Old Story of China   Oil on Linen    42x27"   $15,000

Every story of China is old. I used to joke with friends when they told me I was wise beyond my years - "I have five thousand years behind me, because I am Chinese".

I once asked Kailin why the figures in his paintings are young girls. He said it is because he thinks youth is the symbol or today and the future. With that being said, our youth is also deeply rooted in our family and cultural constellations and heritage; and our legacy will live through generations to come. That is the beauty of life. Never ending.

I was first surprised but instantly taken by Kailin's looser strokes in this painting and the paintings below. While I love the elegance and refinement of his more detailed and ultra realistic approach; the broader, looser strokes are a nice contrast, like a breath of fresh air.

Qi Qi

Qi Qi       Oil on Linen       20x16"        $6,500

This painting is particularly dear to my heart. I could not help but smile when I first saw it.  It reminded me of me when I was a little girl! Plus, it has the same name as my Chinese name! Qi Qi is what my family calls me even today!
I especially like the looser approach and simpler background of the painting. It almost looks unfinished compared to Kailin's other paintings. But it is quite finished, one look at those big, bright and mischievous eyes, we are hooked! I also love the execution on the hands. By the hands alone, we can tell Kailin is truly a master!
Sunrise in May

Sunrise in May    Oil on Linen     42x27"      $15,0000

I was so delighted and thrilled when I first saw those paintings. I noticed a change in style! Kailin is an established and well known artist. He has an unique and recognizable style. He can very well capitalize on that and paint in the same style and every painting is sold before the paint is dry. But he is a serious artist. He lives and breathes art. He never stops exploring, experimenting and reinventing himself and his art. He takes risks. That is what art is about.

As a result of it, we have those truly "new" works of art! When I first looked it, I asked myself: is it still Zhao Kailin? I quickly found the answer: it is still Zhao Kailin, it is his "hands", his "faces", his "colors", his "atmospheres" and his mastery.
When Kailin and I discussed art market in this economy, I complimented on that his paintings still sell so well in comparison to other artists. He said: "In time like this, it is a true test on the quality of art and artists' motivation. If the artists view the quality of art as the most importance thing and never stop pursuing new goals and breaking-throughs, he has nothing to worry. It is the best time to focus on being a real artist which is to create best quality work with depth and meaning. That takes hard work, patience and time."

That is what Kailin does.
