               INTERNATIONAL VISIONS-THE GALLERY

September 2009 Newsletter

   around DC...

Thank you all who attended the reception of Reflection, by Wadsworth Jarrell.  It was so good to see our community embrace this liberating artist! Many of you had the opportunity to get a signed copy of his book entitled The Artist as Revolutionary, written by Robert Douglas. We would like thank Wadsworth for sharing his wonderful vision and enlightening us about his practice. Please stop by International Visions if you have not seen the show or just need another look. The show is up through October 3, 2009.

Stan Getz Trio, Wadsworth Jarrell, Oil on Canvas, 11'' X 14''

An artist's refection of his work is always a rare and special exhibition. Jarrell's exciting colors combined with his passion for pattern makes his work incredibly stimulating. His intricate, sentimental work infuses African traditions and proud black subject matter, making him the monumental artist that he is today.  So many of you mentioned at the opening that you had seen Jarrell's work in the books, Collecting African American Art  by Halima Taha History of Modern Art by H.H. Arnason, and The Hearing Eye edited by, Graham Lock and David Murray. We are glad that you had the opportunity to see his work and meet him in person.

 Mixed Messages

An exhibition deciphering mixed messages in mixed media by Miles Bumbray, Wesley Clark, Ellington Robinson, and Stan Squirewell

          Opening Reception: October 10, 2009

Show: October 7- November 4, 2009

International Visions Gallery will host a conversation between artworks created by four D.C. based artists on the topic of message conveyance in visual language.  Although each artist approaches visual communication from a different angle, the works of Stan Squirewell, Wesley Clark, Ellington Robinson, and Miles Bumbray meet at the intersection of linguistics, symbology, politics, and popular culture. These artists assemble narratives by creating their own terms with which to describe futuristic visions of the possibilities amongst humankind.

        TEZA
Haile Gerima's award-winning film Teza is showing in the U.S.  at the Avalon Theater in Washington D.C.

"Set in Ethiopia and Germany, Teza examines the displacement of African intellectuals, both at home and abroad, through the story of a young, idealistic Ethiopian doctor - Anberber. The film chronicles Anberber's internal struggle to stay true, both to himself and to his homeland, but above all, Teza explores the possession of memory - a right humanity mandates that each of us have - the right to own our pasts."
