Ingrid Calame at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery
Solo Museum Exhibition Opening Friday, September 25, 2009

James Cohan Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Ingrid Calame's solo exhibition at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY. Opening September 25, 2009 and on view through February 28, 2010, Ingrid Calame: Step on a Crack... will feature eleven new works created from tracings of the Buffalo area. The exhibition was organized by Albright-Knox Art Gallery Associate Curator Holly E. Hughes.

Calame is best known for the abstract forms in her paintings, drawings and wall drawings generated from tracings of stains and marks from city streets and other locations, which she then constructs in overlapping arrangements called "constellations." In June 2008, she became the inaugural artist in the Albright-Knox's Artist-in-Residence program. Battling wind, rain, sun, and the heat generated by steel production, Calame and her team made hundreds of square feet of tracings, which she then transformed in her Los Angeles studio into the eleven drawings and paintings comprising this exhibition.

The drawings—traced at numerous sites in and around Buffalo including the ArcelorMittal steel finishing plant, the grain elevators of RiverWright and the Albright-Knox parking lot—have, in the words of the artist "stopped short of being symbols—they are captured images that combine history, physical fact, decay, memory, and personal experience."

Calame will celebrate the September 25 opening with a special talk about the project in the Gallery's Auditorium at 7pm, in addition to a community tracing party and tours of the exhibition. All events in connection with the September 25 opening festivities are free and open to the public.

Following the exhibition closure on February 28, 2010, one work will remain on view, Buffalo: Mittal Steel No. 1 Shipping 192–209, a major wall painting commissioned by the Gallery for its Permanent Collection.
