DOORS OPEN OAKVILLE 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 23, 2009

OAKVILLE, ON – The second annual Doors Open Oakville - one weekend, once a year - when up to 25 buildings of architectural, historic, cultural and social significance open their doors to the public for a town-wide celebration.

This event allows visitors free access to properties that are either not usually open to the public, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Many locations have organized guided tours, displays and activities to enrich the visitor experience. Doors Open Oakville 2009 will take place this weekend on Saturday, September 26 & Sunday, September 27, 2009. Most sites are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check the website at www.doorsopenontario.on.ca to confirm times. No registration or reservations required. Featured sites include;

The Oakville Lighthouse
The lighthouse was built in 1889 after the first lighthouse toppled into Lake Ontario during a severe storm in 1886. Visitors will learn about the hexagonal shape of this historical gem and will view the incredible 270 degree bevelled lens at the top of the lighthouse that for decades, guided countless vessels safely home.

Established in 1839, this church is a must-see for visitors, who will have the chance to climb to the top of the bell-tower and enjoy tours explaining the history behind the stained glass windows and beautiful gardens.
