Curry Stone Design Prize Finalists Announced!
|
Transformative Public Works, Colombia; "Handmade" Buildings, Bangladesh; and the Global Transition Network Named Finalists
|
Architecture for Humanity is proud to announce the finalists for this year's Curry Stone Design Prize! Whether advancing social justice, underscoring the integrity and dignity of local building, or advocating for
community responsibility - "these design initiatives inspire us to think big, take action, and realize the possible," said David Mohney, Prize Secretary. The formal winner announcement will be Thursday, September 24th at the
IdeaFestival in Louisville, Kentucky.
The 2009 Curry Stone Design Prize Finalists Are:
Visionary Public Works, Colombia
Urban projects with a social mission in the city of Medellín include the implementation of iconic, modern libraries and schools, transit, and social programs, led by Alejandro Echeverri, the city's former director of urban projects and
its former mayor, Sergio Fajardo. This urban revitalization has helped transform what was considered the deadliest city in the world into a vibrant, urban hub in just four years.
"Handmade" Buildings, Bangladesh
New construction methods and architectural designs by Anna Heringer involve local building methods and labor in rural Bangladesh and offer an environmentally and economically sustainable alternative to Western-style concrete and steel
buildings.
Transition Network, Communities Worldwide
This "open source" movement is an international, community-led response to global warming and declining oil reserves, championed by the movement's co-founder, Rob Hopkins.

About the Curry Stone Design Prize
The Curry Stone Design Prize honors an individual or group for developing and implementing a visionary design innovation. These emerging projects address critical issues such as access to clean air, food and water, shelter, health care,
energy, education, social justice and the promotion of peace. Winning projects engage communities at the fulcrum of change, raising awareness, empowering individuals and fostering collective revitalization.
Administered by Architecture for Humanity on behalf of the Curry Stone Foundation, the annual international Prize is a no-strings-attached grant of $100,000. Up to four other finalists each receive $10,000. The ongoing nomination process
is anonymous.
