In this exciting program, acclaimed writer José Manuel Prieto (Nocturnal Butterflies of the Russian Empire) and his translator, Esther Allen (Selected Writings of José Martí), will read bilingually from Prieto's latest novel, a sophisticated literary game with allusions to Borges and Proust. Set in the luxury resort of Marbella, on Spain's Costa Brava, Rex is narrated by a tutor who has been hired by a wealthy Russian expatriate family to teach their young son. As the tale unfolds, diamond forgery, swindling the mafia, and laying claim to the throne of the czars all become metaphors for Rex's central obsession the nature of commentary.

José Manuel Prieto was born in 1962 in Havana. He published his first novel, Enciclopedia de una vida en Rusia (Encyclopedia of a Life in Russia), in 1998 in Mexico. His second novel, Livadia (Nocturnal Butterflies of the Russian Empire, 2001), which was published in Barcelona in 1999, has been translated into more than seven languages. Prieto has also emerged as a brilliant translator of Russian literature into Spanish. His translations include poems by Anna Akhmatova, Marina Cvetaeva, and Josef Brodsky as well as prose by Vladimir Mayakovsky, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and Vladimir Nabokov. In 2002 he published two new books: his second book of stories, El tartamudo y la rusa (The Stutterer and the Russian), and his first travel book, Treinta días en Moscú (Thirty Days in Moscow). Rex (2007; 2009) is his latest novel.

Esther Allen is the author of an International PEN report on Translation and Globalization. Allen's translations include The Selected Writings of José Martí; The Tale of the Rose, by Consuelo de Saint Exupèry; Dark Back of Time, by Javier Marías; Dancing with Cuba: A Memoir of the Revolution, by Alma Guillermoprieto; and The Nubian Prince, by Juan Bonilla. Allen is the Executive Director of the Center for Literary Translation at Columbia University and an assistant professor of literature at Baruch College. She has recently been awarded a 2009-2010 Fellowship at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library.
