“Illuminations” is the first New York
solo exhibition by the Russian-born artist Ludmila Aristova. Scheduled to open
on November 30, 2010 at Noho Gallery, the show represents the artist’s
“new series of fiber art works, where the combinations of brightly colored
and metallic threads in almost every piece catch the light and create shimmering
effects that can only be compared to the brush strokes of the Impressionists.
Aristova attributes the luminosity of her recent abstract compositions to the
fact that she has recently been awarded U.S. citizenship, something that has
opened the floodgates of her creativity in new and exciting ways. She says that
the new sense of freedom has caused it to blossom and become more bold in both
color and design.” *
In these works, Aristova combines hand painting with dyed
silks to create complex chromatic contrasts that are considerably enhanced by
painstaking hand and machine stitching with different colored threads. While
painting represents a prominent element, another technique that Aristova employs
successfully in her compositions is layered pleats. This is especially
evident in some of her “Illuminations” on a considerably smaller
scale, wherein she explores the possibilities of creating more Minimalist
compositions. Although most, but not all, of these pieces are under ten inches
square, she employs folds of fabric configured in various directions to create
rhythmic and sensual compositions evoking the sense of a much larger scale.
A graduate of Moscow Textile Institute, Ludmila Aristova
became interested in fiber art during her 1991 visit to the United States and
has been working in this field almost exclusively since moving to New York in
2003. Aristova’s work has been exhibited extensively. Solo exhibits have
included the All-Russia Museum of Decorative-Applied and Folk Arts, and the
Museum of All-Russia State Library of Foreign Languages in Moscow, The Moscow
Art Gallery in Toronto, Canada, a traveling exhibit throughout major cities in
Germany and an artist’s exhibit at the XVI European Patchwork Meeting in
Ste Marie-aux-Mines, France. Aristova’s work is included in museum
and private collections worldwide, including the Museum of Arts & Design in
New York, International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, and
All-Russia Museum of Decorative-Applied and Folk Arts in
Moscow.
