Through the CFE for each issue, Creative Quarterly seeks answers to these questions:
“...Where does your inspiration come from? What person, place or thing inspires your
work?...”. Which, although perhaps a big ask, produces interesting results, ie
“...Visual ideas. Ideas that can be re-interpreted in paint or pixels. Not to copy,
but to be inspired...“. Look for this inspiration in Issue 21 due out in the northern
hemisphere Winter, 2010.
Bodvin, an American living and working in New Zealand, is also inspired by this notion
of re-interpretation. For over a decade now he has been re-inventing the nature of the
still life painting - by continually posing the question - ‘...what would Matisse
create if he were alive today and working in the digital environment?
Clay makes new visual narratives by merging images of childhood events, and familiar
objects, with contemporary created rooms and found interiors. Of the work, Bodvin says
“...they are composite celebrations of two histories - my own as an artist and that of
the painted still life...”.
