CHICAGO: "This show is a happy return to a way of working, a way of being an artist shelved a long time ago."

Many familiar with the work of Philip von Zweck will know him for providing context(s). Through projects like VONZWECK, Something Else and Temporary Allegiance, von Zweck placed himself in the role of producer, coordinating, for various platforms, the work of others as part of a practice that challenged both assumptions about sole authorship and institutionalized relationships with audience. With the idea that art is at its core, experience, von Zweck’s practice had thus became one of creating alternative and shared sites for production and engagement, sites that intentionally disengage from the market economy and the institution of the commercial art gallery.

Reflecting on these projects as ones engaged in critique but perhaps from a passive-aggressive or specious position, von Zweck has since chosen to return to the tradition of solely authored, studio-made artworks as a re-engagement of risk and vulnerability at the service of the political. For his SOLO exhibition, he has chosen to exhibit a series of new paintings – produced in a somewhat secret assignation with his own ‘studio.’ While the author of these paintings might still work from a position of suspicion of the ‘art-world,’ The Fortieth Anniversary of the First Anniversary of May ’68 (in September) aims to test that suspicion against the honesty and insecurity of both working alone and making oneself public.

Philip von Zweck opens the 2009/2010 exhibitions at threewalls. His projects have been published and exhibited widely including inclusion in the recent group show Heartland at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; solo shows, Post at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and Temporary Allegiance at Gallery 400, Chicago and Moore College of Art + Design, Philadelphia. His performance Fryvalry , with Kevin Jennings has been produced annually since 2007. He has done a number works for TV and radio, including Object Lesson on CLTV (still in production) and collaborating on Blind Spot on WLUW from 2004-2006. Since 1995, von Zweck has produced and been host of Something Else on WLUW. He has curated a number of projects independently and collaboratively and ran the gallery VONZWECK from 2005-2008, at his home in Chicago. Philip von Zweck was the recipient of the Emerging Artist Award from the Driehaus Foundation in 2007.

Join us this Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 12:00-5:00 PM for a symposium organized by von Zweck, featuring talks by artist Carrie Gundersdorf, art historians Melissa Johnson, Annika Marie and Simon Anderson and professor of comparative literature, Craig Carson.

Artist Stefano Cossu started the SoFiET project (Science of Fiction Entertainment Technologies) in 2006 in Los Angeles, as a research branch of his project Le Industrie Invisibili. SoFiET’s research is focused on the threshold between fiction and reality, by means of pinhole photography. Photography is seen by SoFiET as a physical event, tied to a constructive, performative and/or bodily factor, which always has something ineffable. The fuzziness and the visual flaws, caused by a non-industrial construction of the cameræ obscuræ used and by accidental light leaks, are the main exterior features of SoFiET’s images. They want to testify to the flimsiness, and therefore the uniqueness, of the photographic image landed on the film almost by chance.

Stefano Cossu graduated in 1998 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari, Italy, and in 2001 in a sculpture specialization course at the Academy of Fine Artst in Stuttgart, Germany. He attended several seminaries and artist residency programs in Europe and the USA, including the Fondazione Ratti in Como, Italy (with M. Abramovic), Raid Projects in Los Angeles and, currently, threewalls in Chicago. He founded the Le Industrie Invisibili project in 2001 and SoFiET in 2006, which cover his whole art production. His works have been shown in several venues in Europe and the USA, including Raid Projecs and LA Artcore in Los Angeles, 516 Arts in Albuquerque, NM, Galleria Il Ponte in Florence, Italy, Viafarini in Milan, Accademia di San Luca in Rome (October 2009).
