Detroit, November 29, 2010 -- The first-ever Detroit Holiday Food Bazaar presents an opportunity for Detroit's food lovers to indulge their love for hand-crafted, local gourmet edibles while supporting the entrepreneurial efforts that have come about as a result of the new cottage food laws.
The Food Bazaar will provide a unique and festive shopping atmosphere. Wine, hot cocoa and light appetizers will be available, DJ Michael Geiger will provide music, and prints will be on display by photographer Marvin Shaouni. The three-room Whitdel gallery will allow room to browse and mingle as shoppers enjoy a drink or snack.
The Bazaar will feature a wide array of vendors, some established, some brand new. Shoppers will be able to choose from a variety of shelf-stable items that would make excellent gifts, such as chocolates, candies, jams, vinegars and locally roasted coffees. Perishable handmade items such as specialty wontons, Oaxacan tamales and empanadas will also be available, perfect to put in the freezer for holiday cocktail party appetizers.
The Food Bazaar was organized in order to give very small vendors an opportunity to gain exposure to a buying public without the hurdles of applying to a farmer's market or paying booth fees that can drastically cut into the profits of a fledgling business. We also wanted to emphasize community by having an event where people would be encouraged to meet and mingle with the vendors and other fellow food lovers.
Like most farmers' markets or craft fairs, the Bazaar will be a cash-only event. There is no fee for admission. It is appreciated if guests RSVP via the
Facebook event page.
The Food Bazaar has been organized by Noelle Lothamer, freelance writer and author of the blog
Simmer Down! and co-founder of
Beau Bien Fine Foods. Whitdel Arts, run by Aaron Timlin of CAID, has generously donated the use of their space.
