Hello, friends of Jack Straw-

We hope you had a fantastic (if chilly) Thanksgiving.  After a short break, we're plunging into a very busy week of activities here at Jack Straw!

Tomorrow (Wednesday) night, we're featuring a screening of Werner Herzog's documentary Lessons of Darkness.  The event is in connection with the release of former Jack Straw Writer and Curator Matt Briggs's new book The Strong Man, and will be followed by a talk with him and former Writers Program Curator Charles Mudede.

This Friday and next Tuesday bring two events in quick succession around Jim Hobbs and Kinski's new project occupying the Jack Straw New Media Gallery: A CLEAR DAY AND NO MEMORIES will have to be seen and heard to be explained, so come to the opening on Friday, and then come by next Tuesday for a conversation about the work with Hobbs, Kinski, and the Frye Museum's Robin Held.

December's Composer Spotlight will be presented by Jack Straw Resident Artist, and longtime friend of Jack Straw, Jesse Canterbury.  Read on about all of these events, and Sonarchy Radio's schedule for December, below.

Thanks very much for your support of Jack Straw.  We hope to see you soon!

Jack Straw Productions, Raven Chronicles, and the Publication Studio present

A Screening of Herzog's Lessons of Darkness
and a talk with Matt Briggs and Charles Mudede

Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 7pm
Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE

On the occasion of the release of Matt Briggs's second novel, The Strong Man, Jack Straw Productions, The Raven Chronicles, and The Publication Studio will show Werner Herzog's documentary about the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm followed by a talk with screenwriter and critic Charles Mudede and an open discussion with Briggs and Mudede.

The Publication Studio is pleased to announce the release of The Strong Man, a novel about the first Gulf War, by Matt Briggs. The book is scheduled for global release as a free annotatable social media space, a DRM-free PDF ebook, and print copy on October 29th, 2010. Of the book, Tom Paine, author of The Pearl of Kuwait, wrote, "Matt Briggs shows us the realities of the 'new war' that started with the Gulf War. In clear, strong prose he takes us deep into the truth of that forgotten, almost invisible, but tragic war"

Lessons of Darkness (Lektionen in Finsternis), directed by Werner Herzog, is a 1992 film that depicts the aftermath of the four-day offensive of Operation Desert Storm in the first Gulf War. The film is virtually devoid of commentary and the imagery concentrates on the devastation of the Iraqi and Kuwaiti landscape. The last segment of the movie shows crews working to put out the oil fires.

Charles Mudede is an Associate Editor for the Seattle weekly The Stranger. The 2004 film Police Beat, which he wrote based on his column in The Stranger of the same name, was selected for competition at Sundance 2005. Mudede also wrote the screenplay for the movie Zoo, one of the top five American films to be presented at the Directors Fortnight sidebar at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.  He was the 1998 Jack Straw Writers Program Curator.

Matt Briggs is the author of four collections of stories including The Remains of River Names and Misplaced Alice. His first novel, Shoot the Buffalo, was awarded an American Book Award by the Before Columbus Foundation. Recent work has appeared in The Chicago Review, The Golden Handcuffs Review, Opium Magazine, and TRSNR.  Briggs was a 2002 Jack Straw Writer and the 2007 Jack Straw Writers Program Curator.

Gallery hours: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm

A CLEAR DAY AND NO MEMORIES is a new multimedia installation, created through the Jack Straw New Media Gallery Residency Program, comprised of multiple 16mm film projections and recordings on vinyl, focusing on the atmospheric and atrophied architecture around Fort Worden and Puget Sound.  Taking inspiration from a Wallace Stevens poem of the same name, A CLEAR DAY AND NO MEMORIES presents the viewer with an ever-shifting sense of place - one that is never the same twice.  Within the gallery, 16mm films constantly run on looping machines, implicitly guiding the viewer through various environs and monuments. The audio recordings act not as a synchronized soundtrack, but instead become a physical presence within the space redirecting the mood and gaze of the entire installation. By manipulating the complex relationship between film and sound in a way that disregards a traditional or linear narrative, the work contemplates the fluid and evocative nature of memory and place.

Composer Spotlight

Jesse CanterburyJESSE CANTERBURY
Vertigo
Wed, December 8, 7:30pm
Jack Straw Productions
4261 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, 98105

Jesse Canterbury will discuss the process of composing and recording music for his latest Jack Straw-supported album (recorded through his 2009 Jack Straw artist residency), Vertigo, which features the talents of Joanne de Mars (cello), Chris Stover (trombone), and Tom Baker (guitar). The discussion will touch on the subjects of the album's unique instrumentation as well as the challenge of crafting a coherent and cohesive CD's worth of music. Recorded musical examples, both from the finished album and from outtakes, will be played to illustrate the process.

Clarinetist Jesse Canterbury has worked in new music spanning modern classical music, improvisation, and avant-jazz. He has performed some of the masterworks of the modern literature, such as the Quartet for the End of Time and Pierrot lunaire, and has participated in many premieres of new works by Pacific Northwest composers. He has recorded a critically acclaimed album of music for two clarinetists in collaboration with William O. Smith, titled collage/décollage, which features several world-premiere recordings of Smith's music, as well as commissions from Tom Baker and Canadian composer and clarinetist François Houle. Additionally, he is a member of several "avant-jazz" ensembles, most notably the Tom Baker Quartet, the Tom Varner Tentet, and Andrew Boscardin's Zubatto Syndicate. His most recent work can be heard on the album Vertigo, released in October 2010 on Present Sounds Records. Canterbury is currently working on music for a new project, called Crosstalk. He can be heard on Present Sounds, Capstone, Omnitone, and New World Records.

Jack Straw Productions and Washington Composers Forum present Composer Spotlight, a series of talks and performances by composers, musicians, and scholars of new and innovative music every second Wednesday of each month. For more information about Composer Spotlight artists and the series, .
