Sustainability Film: "Waste Land"

Waste Land follows renowned contemporary artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The film documents Muniz's collaboration with the self-described "catadores" or pickers of recyclable materials as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage. Directed by Lucy Walker and featuring Vic Muniz, 2010, 98 min. Portuguese/English with English subtitles. 2010 Sundance World Cinema Audience Award Winner and 2010 Full Frame Documentary Festival Audience Award Winner.
The discussion leader for the film is Stephanie Sherman, Collaborative Director and co-founder at Greensboro's,
Elsewhere Artist Collaborative. Stephanie Sherman is a writer, artist, and organizer exploring the magic of place and presence. Stephanie oversees the transformation of a three-story thrift store into a living museum, an international residency program, and creative laboratory exploring collaboration through things.

5th Annual Sustainability Film & Discussion Series to address current issues affecting the environment. The year long series features new documentary films and post-screening discussions with local experts.
