The Quantum Police
*

/“There is an invisible and little known force amongst us called ‘The
Quantum Police’. They operate internationally and assimilate unnoticed
into civilian communities. //Their actions strive toward renegotiating
the relationship between individual and society and claim that the law,
morality and reality are all unique to the inner self.”

/

The artist Per Hüttner and curator Anne Klontz have investigated the
intellectual traces of The Quantum Police (QP) in Europe, North America
and Asia and will present their findings through interviews,
performances, writings and an exhibition. The project will be made
public in three different locations in December 2010 and January 2011:
Stockholm, Sweden; Wuhan, China; and Brussels, Belgium.

*Brussels, Belgium*
*Valerie Lambert Gallery* **

15 January – 21 February 2011
Opening reception Saturday, 15 January 6 –10 p.m.

Valerie Lambert Gallery will host the culmination of the QP
investigation uniting the collected and contradictory sources of
evidence and works pertaining to this mysterious movement. Central for
the project is a copy of the original 1969 “Quantum Law Manifesto” by
Johnny Ross and Willie Hansen who started the movement with the goal of
inventing a new legal philosophy.

The research has been aided by several people who have shared their time
and knowledge to enrich the project. They include the American artist
Charlie White, Chinese writer Wang Xiao Ping and a Swedish QP mediator
who wishes to remain anonymous. Each of their experiences reveals the
diverse interpretations of both Quantum Law and Quantum Police.

In the late 80s, Charlie White developed a series of performances he
called “Interviews” based on a collection of transcribed interviews he
made with QP founder Johnny Ross. White re-recorded the interviews and
added a soundtrack that was interpreted live by a DJ as White performed
wearing an LAPD uniform and using materials like glass sheets, halogen
lamps and vinyl texts. During the opening, re-enactments of White’s
performances will be staged in the gallery and Belgian sound artist
Patrick Thinsy will mix unique sound collages from recorded interviews
with QP followers.

The Chinese writer Wang Xiao Ping has been influenced by both Asian and
Western writers. On display will be interviews with the writer as well
as his recent short story inspired by QP and /The Trial/ by Franz Kafka.
Visitors will also be able to read beautiful handmade “best of QP” lists
created by the anonymous QP mediator.

The above mentioned QP memorabilia and other traces of QP activities
will form a small museological display in the gallery. In addition, the
gallery’s ground floor will be transformed into a Quantum Police Station
complete with a staff area and custody room, from which the public will
hear discussions from captive, yet unseen individuals. Outside on street
level, a QP public reception area will be functioning 24/7.

For more information, visit the gallery’s web site
atwww.valerie-lambert.com or contact
them on contact (at) valerie-lambert.com.

Prior to the main exhibition in Brussels, there will be two satellite
events taking place in Stockholm, Sweden and Wuhan, China. These events
have been organized in close collaboration with the aforementioned QP
devotees Charlie White, Wang Xiao Ping and the anonymous QP mediator.

*Stockholm, Sweden*
*DKTUS*
*Opening reception Saturday, 4 December 7 p.m.

In the mind of one Swedish woman, QP appear disguised as normal police
and carry out actions that allow crimes to pass unpunished. She is
convinced that her purpose is to serve as a mediator of QP messages in
spite of the fact that she deems the movement immoral.

For the event at DKTUS, Per Hüttner will create a performance based on
this anonymous individual’s role as a QP mediator. The performance will
include an interview with the woman and is inspired by the early works
of Charlie White. In collaboration with Hüttner, musician and DJ
Jean-Louis Huhta will perform using a musical score created by White.

*The audience is asked to wear warm clothes and bring an umbrella in
case of rain/snow as part of the performance will take place outdoors.

the curator, anneklontz(at) gmail.com.

**Manufactura’s Studio*

20 December 2010 – 7 January 2011

During a residency at Manufactura’s Studio in Wuhan, China, Per Hüttner
will be working closely together with the Chinese writer Wang Xiao Ping
who has been interested in The Quantum Police and their underground
existence in China. Wang describes how he had long heard stories about
the police not being the police and had considered it a “normal
practice” in his country until he learned about different factions of QP
existing in the west. Inspired by Kafka’s /The Trial/, Wang is writing a
novel about QP and will depict their actions through a Chinese
equivalent of Kafka’s novel. Hüttner will travel with Wang as they
journey through the city of Wuhan to create stories and research
individual accounts of The Quantum Police in China. For information,
visit www.manufacturas-studio.com or
contact the curator, anneklontz (at) gmail.com.
