5 Questions
Mark Yee had been painting at home for years, but hadn't taken an art class until he won a gift certificate to the Art Center. Ten weeks after walking into his first class, Large-Scale Painting, Mark has two great paintings and five answered questions.

1. When are you most creative?
When I'm working quietly by myself.

2. Would you rather be an artist or a millionaire?
A millionaire, so I could enjoy more art.

3. What was your favorite year in school?
Kindergarten. I remember playing Duck, Duck, Goose; there was something so satisfying about that game. It really mimics what goes on in the rest of your life.

4. Can you ride a bike?
I can ride a bike, and I'm teaching my kids how to.

5. What was the last exhibition you saw?
Luc Tuymans at the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Joseph Gray collection at the Art Institute.

DIY Culture and Artist-Run Programs in Chicago and Houston

Can an arts institution have regional impact while still being nationally and internationally relevant? Does regionally focused granting encourage a regional "type" of art?

Next Tuesday, arts administrators and curators from Chicago and Houston will gather to tackle that exact questions.

Join Art Center Director of Exhibitions Allison Peters Quinn as she talks with Co-Executive Director of Diverseworks in Houston, TX, Diane Barber and Gallery 400 Director, Lorelei Stewart from right here in Chicago, IL. They'll discuss how foundations and the process of re-granting is influencing the landscape of contemporary art, both figuratively and literally.

Visionary poetics
Read about our well-versed class on the 4833 blog.

Since 2008, teaching artist Valerie Wallace has taught a Visual Art Poetry Class at the Art Center. And for the last month or sa, Valerie has been publishing some of her students' work on our 4833 blog. Each poem responds to past exhibitions here at the Art Center. Valerie gave us a few insights into her method, teaching style and inspirations:

On encouraging the poetic flow and creating poetry:
I ask my students to think about and honor their obsessions in the world ... We jump right into creating poems in this class - everyone comes away with 5-10 new pieces by the end of the 5-week workshop. I don't give them much time to think about writing before we do it each week, but we do discuss process and form and decisions about the elements of poetry.

On poetry as art:
Poetry and other writing questions, translates, transforms, explores the world - linguistically. ... Writing poetry is an entering-into the world artistically. But it's also work. I think that all artists have this in common - the joy of it, the hard work of it.

On the Art Center as inspiration:
The Art Center has a great vibe, frankly, so there is a special feeling in the air just walking in. I think this is because the Art Center showcases art that takes risks - socially, creatively, technically. This in turn makes a very safe space for writers to explore new territory.
