CALLING ALL LOVERS OF EUROPEAN CINEMA!

CANADIAN FILM INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES FINAL DAYS FOR

2010 EUROPEAN UNION FILM FESTIVAL – DEC. 2 TO 5

OTTAWA, ON (Dec. 2, 2010)--The Canadian Film Institute (CFI) is calling on all European film buffs to take advantage of the 2010 European Union Film Festival, now in its final days.  The 25th edition of the European Union Film Festival began on November 18 featuring the Belgian comedy, “A PERFECT MATCH” starring legendary Belgian actor, Jan Decleir and wraps up with Bulgaria on December 5.

“THE WAY TO THE TOP” by Valentina Fidanova-Kolarova, as well as two animated shorts by well-renowned filmmakers, Gospodin Nedelchev (“THE FLY”) and Anri Koulev (“THE RAG”), will be presented at the Library and Archives Canada on December 5 at 7 p.m.  “THE WAY TO THE TOP” is a charming and often amusing tale about a young boy from the city who learns from his grandfather and the elders of his rural village that there is more to life than the Internet and electronic toys.

Some of the other films showcasing during the final days of the European Union Film Festival are:

·         “EXCHANGE” (ROMANIA) by Nicolae Margineanu on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.;

·         “LANDSCAPE NO. 2” (SLOVENIA) by Vinko Moderndorfer on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 9 p.m.;

·         “MUSIC” (SLOVAKIA) by Juraj Nvota on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.;

·         “HOW TO DRAW A PERFECT CIRCLE” (PORTUGAL) by Marco Marins on Friday, Dec. 3 at 9 p.m.;

·         “YOU, THE LIVING” (SWEDEN) by Roy Andersson on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.; and

·         “SOMERS TOWN” (UNITED KINGDOM) by Shane Meadows on Friday, Dec. 4 at 9 p.m.

“The real essence of this festival is that movie-goers really get a chance to view highly acclaimed European films that are almost impossible to see in Ottawa,” said CFI Executive Director Tom McSorley.  “Together with the EU member states, the EU Delegation to Canada and the Library and Archives Canada, we are able to offer a unique, cultural opportunity to travel to Europe through these films.”

In addition, director Marco Martins will be in attendance to represent his stylish and controversial film about a love-interest between twin siblings, “HOW TO DRAW A PERFECT CIRCLE” (PORTUGAL) on Friday, December 3, 2010 at 9 p.m.

All films in the European Union Film Festival are National Capital premieres and are screening at the Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  Admission is $8.00 for CFI members, senior citizens and students, and $12.00 for the general public. Annual CFI memberships are available at the door for $15.00.  For more information, call: 613-232-6727 or visit the CFI website: www.cfi-icf.ca.
