Magna Carta show Chosen by SFMOMA Education Program, Curated by Joseph Del Pesco
Course Focuses on "The Document as Coordinate and Contract"
San Francisco, CA. Cain Schulte Contemporary Art | SF is please to announce the selection of their current show Magna Carta: Art/Paper as a topic of study in the SFMOMA's Pickpocket Almanack Fall 2010 education program.
Pickpocket Almanack is an experimental educational program commissioned by SFMOMA and overseen by independent curator Joseph del Pesco. The course, titled "The Document as Coordinate and Contract" and headed by Rick and Megan Prelinger, of the Prelinger Library and Archives in San Francisco, asks students to tie together current thought and practice in the fields of geography, visuality and human rights. Students were directed to examine the works of two shows, one at at Cain Schulte, and the other at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.
For Cain Schulte's Magna Carta, 20 international artists were asked to create pieces thematically anchored in an investigation of the thirteenth century legal document the Magna Carta, which is widely considered a pivotal turning point in the attempt to establish individual liberties, and a key element in the radical transformation of constitutional thought. The works in this exhibition explore contemporary issues focusing on the protection of personal freedom, individual rights and unlawful imprisonment. The exhibition seeks to highlight the universality and contemporary relevance of the issues emanating from the Magna Carta in today's increasingly globalized world.
Megan Shaw Prelinger is a writer and artist working primarily in text and the cofounder of the Prelinger Library, an experimental research library in San Francisco.
Rick Prelinger founded Prelinger Archives, a collection of advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur films, in 1982. In 2002, the film collection was acquired by the Library of Congress.
