Chan Hampe Galleries @ Raffles Hotel

Presents…

Floating Worlds

10 Dec 2010 – 10 Jan 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 8 Nov 2010

1 Chan Hampe Galleries @ Raffles Hotel is pleased to announce its third exhibition for 2010 - Floating Worlds - a group exhibition comprising of three of Singapore’s most accomplished young artists: Genevieve Chua, Michael Lee, and Grace Tan.

2 Floating Worlds – usually associated with the Japanese term “Ukiyo” of which described the urban lifestyle (especially the pleasure seeking aspects) of the historical Edo-period – is in this context used to encapsulate the vivid imaginings of contemporary Singaporean artists who use their direct environment as inspiration to create personal mythologies and dream-like narratives.

3 This exhibition will include new works by each artist in the mediums of photography, digital printing, and sculptural installation.

4 Floating Worlds runs from Dec 10, 2010 until Jan 10, 2011 at Chan Hampe Galleries @ Raffles Hotel, which is located at Raffles Hotel Arcade #01-04 North Bridge Road. The exhibition is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily except public holidays. Admission is free. For enquiries, please call +65 6338 1962.

About the Artists

7 Genevieve Chua (b.1984, Singapore)

Chua’s research interests are in the fear of the unknown and her process involves the appropriation and reinvention of Southeast Asian horror narratives. These new stories are then
realised as a website, installation, drawing, or most recently photography.

She has been selected to participate in the Singapore Biennale 2011 and the BMW Young Artist Series at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (2010).  Recent solo exhibitions include Raised as a Pack of
Wolves presented by the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (2009) and Full Moon
and Foxes an installation commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore as part of the Singapore
Art Show (2009).

8 Michael Lee (b. 1972, Singapore)

Lee received his Master and Bachelor of Communication Studies from Nanyang Technological University in 2001 and 1997 respectively. He is an artist and curator based in Singapore. His research addresses representations of the built environment, especially the contexts and implications of its lost elements. His observations are mainly transformed into objects, diagrams, situations, curations or essays.

He has participated in The 3rd Guangzhou Triennial 2008 (Independent Projects section; Guangdong Museum of Art), The 2005 World Exposition (Singapore Pavilion; Nagoya) and International Film & Video Association Film Award & Festival 1997 (Winner, Experimental Category; Texas). His curatorial projects include Between, Beside, Beyond: Daniel Libeskind's Reflections and Key Works 1989-2014 (Singapore Art Museum, 2007). His accolades include the Young Artist Award (Visual Arts) 2005, conferred by the National Arts Council, Singapore.

9 Grace Tan (b. 1979, Malaysia)

Grace is a multi-disciplinary practitioner specialising in the area of wearable and spatial structures. Formally trained in fashion design, her experimentations often blur the lines between fashion, fine art, architecture, and mathematics.

Since her graduation in 1999, Grace has culminated an extensive portfolio with her in-depth industrial knowledge and collaborative experience across disciplines. Her works have been presented in Singapore, London, Venice, Melbourne, Tokyo, Nagoya and Shanghai.

In addition to her design career, Grace also develops and teaches the design curriculum at School of The Arts, Singapore. Grace is currently based in Singapore.
