Moon Medicine: Contemporary artist, Sanford Biggers’
experimental concert at the Rubin Museum of Art
WHEN: Saturday, January 15, 3pm & 6pm $15
WHERE: Rubin Museum of Art, 150 W 17th Street at 7th Avenue, New York
WHAT: This debut of an evocative performance work by the artist
Sanford Biggers layers an original
soundscape onto found video images drawn from the comics, film noir movies, the
punk rock scene, Samoan danc,e and Buddhist worship. Cultural influences ranging
from African American history, jazz and hip hop to 1970s sitcoms inform this
mélange of aural and visual landscapes.
The score calls for koto, a traditional Japanese stringed
musical instrument, piano, and vocals, which will be performed by Imani Uzuri,
Sumie Kaneko, Mark Hinds and the artist, and intercut with music spun by DJ
Jahi Sundance.
This performance is a work of art in the exhibition, Grain
of Emptiness: Buddhism Inspired Contemporary Art, an assembly of videos,
paintings, photographs, installations and performances at the Rubin through
April 11, 2011. With featured
artists Theaster Gates, Atta Kim, Wolfgang Laib, and Charmion von Wiegand, and
Biggers, the exhibition highlights the continuously evolving nature of art
inspired by Buddhist ideas and themes.
