COSIMA VON BONIN'S FAR NIENTE FOR WITTE DE WITH'S SLOTH SECTION, LOOP # 01 OF THE LAZY SUSAN SERIES, A ROTATING EXHIBITION 2010 - 2011

On show until 9 January 2011

The word at the heart of this exhibition – sloth – is a misleading one. Taken now to mean mere laziness, it has a more complex origin. In the Middle Ages, it was labeled by the Church as one of the seven deadly sins, and included elements of restlessness, verbosity and unregulated curiosity. One beautiful oxymoron used to describe sloth in the eighteenth century was “busy idleness” and moralizing tales were written to dissuade people from trying to pursue too many ideas at once. Sloth is therefore a provocative theme for an artist to choose, especially in these times when we are increasingly told that art is just a “left-wing hobby.”
Is it Von Bonin’s way of reflecting upon the rhythms of production and presentation that the art market demands? Or is her exhibition title simply the expression of a personal, deep-seated desire to hide on an Italian island and do nothing?

Between You and I - intervention 4
on show until 9 January 2011

15-5519 is the new site-specific public intervention by artist Ayse Erkmen that playfully engages with the tactile characteristics of Witte de With’s architecture. Erkmen has added a temporary “coat” to Witte de With’s building by partially covering its façade with a monochrome composition reminiscent of a nylon winter jacket. The work's title, 15-5519, is the color code of Pantone Color Institute's proposed color of 2010, while the source of the stitched pattern composition is Theo van Doesberg's painting Contra-Composition XVI (1925).   read more
