HELP ME in The New Yorker
We are proud to share with you the following coverage of HELP ME in The New Yorker.
from the December 13 issue
Vernacular photographs, those amateur snapshots that you see at the flea market, have inspired artists from Walker Evans to Luc Tuymans. But the growing interest in (and market for) anonymous images over the past few decades has resulted in more books and exhibitions focussed on the pictures themselves. Fifty-seven of them, from the collection of the poet Gillian McCain, are scattered across the walls here, and the historical range (from tintypes to Polaroids) and the random quality of the mix are exhilarating. Images of rifles, costumes, and injuries crop up repeatedly, but there’s no real theme, only plenty of diverting quirkiness and inspiration. Through Dec. 18..

In conjunction with the HELP ME exhibition, curated by Gillian McCain and Megan Cump, CCNY presents a lecture and panel discussion about found photography. Each panelist will present excerpts from their collections of found photographs and related projects while addressing the resonance, subversive possibilities, and relevance of found and vernacular photography, including themes from the HELP ME exhibition. The panel will also discuss and explore the desire to uncover, comprehend, repurpose, and accumulate “orphan” images.
The CCNY Lecture series is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
