From Roxana Nagygeller’s “People in Their Place”

Have you had the chance to explore our latest Project of Economica: Women and the Global Economy, Focusing on Latin America? The exhibition, presented in both English and Spanish, explores the economic challenges and successes of women in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Mexico, as the region’s economy begins to recover from the global economic meltdown. (Read “Growth for Latin America, Gains for Women?” for an overview.) Here’s a glimpse of a few of our favorite stories:

ARGENTINA: A Day in the Life of Maria Rozario>> Argentine artist Diana Dowek presents a series of portraits of Maria Rosario, an average working woman in a factory in Argentina.

COSTA RICA: People in their Place>> Photographer Roxana Nagygeller presents an intimate, touching series of portraits of immigrant women in Costa Rica, working as domestic help.

MEXICO: Women, Machismo, and Opportunity>> Ivonne Monteagudo shares her thoughts on being a successful businesswoman in Mexico and discusses how more Mexican women can advance in business.

Participate in the exhibition by commenting on and recommending stories, and help us spread the word about Focusing on Latin America by sharing your favorite story on your social networks!

Aminatta Forna was raised in Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom and now divides her time between London and Sierra Leone.  She is the author of several books including her most recent, The Memory of Love, which is set in post-colonial Sierra Leone a few years after the civil war, and offers a breathtaking view of modern Africa through the eyes of both insiders and outsiders who struggle to cope with the aftermath of a war waged against and among civilians.

The tortuous events of Sierra Leone's history have dominated Forna's writing. She is the daughter of a former Sierra Leonean cabinet minister and dissident, murdered by the state in 1975. In 2003, Forna helped build a primary school in her family's village of Rogbonko, where she is also working to establish a cashew plantation named Kholifa Estates after the fictional plantation in her novel Ancestor Stones.  Forna is a trustee of the Royal Literary Fund, sits on the advisory committee of the Caine Prize for African Writing and is a member of the International Museum of Women’s Global Council.

Your support is especially important as we plan for our next project, Young Women Speaking the Economy, and promote our current global online exhibitions. IMOW Collaborates with TEDx for TEDWomen

On December 6 and 7, hundreds of dynamic, exciting, and forward-thinking men and women (including IMOW’s Executive Director Clare Winterton and Founding Board Member Elizabeth Colton) convened in Washington, D.C. for the first ever TEDWomen conference to discuss how women and girls are reshaping the future.

IMOW was thrilled to be invited by TEDWomen to provide virtual curated tours to organizers of TEDx for TEDWoman events across the globe. IMOW Curated Tours introduced TEDx participants to IMOW and gave a peek at some of the most popular content in Economica! Organizers of TEDx events were invited to utilize these resources as part of their TEDx programming, to keep attendees engaged and inspired throughout the conference.

Thank you, TEDWomen, for inviting IMOW to participate!
