Time and Placepaintings 2000-2010

through 16 January 2011

In a recent special issue of the Dutch art magazine Kunstbeeld, which lists "the best of 2010", De Pont comes up several times. Our Sophie Calle exhibition, shown in Tilburg last spring, was pronounced the best solo exhibition of the year in the Netherlands. Although many did see the show, we still hear about those who regret having missed it. Don't let that happen with Howard Hodgkin! There are still a few weeks left to see his exhibition at De Pont before it travels to the San Diego Art Museum.

In Kunstbeeld IJsbrand van Veelen writes about looking at Hodgkin's work with his ten-year-old daughter: "She begins to observe more carefully, more intently and gradually discovers all kinds of things. How he paints across the frame and how that creates a special effect. A few resolute strokes on an old cutting board. On a door. Or is it a tabletop? What a great sense of color he has. How he gets his paintings to sing with enthralling combinations of color (...). Little by little, we both fall under the spell of Hodgkin's work."

Tacita Dean

Michael Hamburger

through 23 January 2011

Tacita Dean (Canterbury, 1965) belongs, along with artists such as Gillian Wearing, Steve McQueen and Sam Taylor-Wood, to the generation of British film and video artists who have been getting considerable attention in recent years. Michael Hamburger (2007), Dean's film of twenty-eight minutes which was acquired by De Pont in 2009, is part of her series of moving film portraits on, among others, the Italian artist Mario Merz and the American dancer/choreographer Merce Cunningham.

When Tacita Dean was asked to create a work related to the writer W.G. Sebald (1944-2001) she focused on his friend, the poet and translator Michael Hamburger. In Sebald's book The Rings of Saturn, he describes how he came to meet Hamburger. The film primarily deals with Hamburger's fondness for apples and with the orchard that he planted next to his house in Suffolk, having used the seeds of apples that he had found or been given. The large house with its overgrown garden, the sunlight, the rattling wind and the emergence of a rainbow serve as metaphors for the man as a poet.

Robert Therrien
sculptures and works on paper
29 January - 15 May 2011

Born in Chicago in 1947, Robert Therrien grew up in San Francisco and moved to Los Angeles in 1971 where he still lives and works. In the early 1980s he became known for making objects with simple recognizable shapes such as pitchers, coffins and doors, created in a variety of media including copper, wood and bronze. He is renowned for transforming everyday things into extraordinary sculptures, often by increasing their scale many times.

Therrien’s work has often been associated with Pop art. It has also been related to the legacy of Surrealism in the evocation of the uncanny and extraordinary. However, his ability to reveal surprising perspectives and to convey an array of moods, from the haunting to the playful, defy such definitions and he remains one of the most compelling artists working today.
