David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present an exhibition of Pop-inspired
mosaic glass and mirror sculptures by California artist, Jean Wells. Her
sculptures are larger than life, witty and fun, yet poignant and strike a cord
that begs for closer examination. They are a combination of irreverent
celebration and criticism of consumerism, feminism and a pleasure-seeking
society. This exhibition focuses less on her food and diner seductions and more
on icons of art creation, fashion and current culture. While her work may be
very reminiscent of Warhol, Lichtenstein, Oldenburg and Rosenquist and there may
be a number of conceptual undercurrents, her social commentary is to be aware of
what is going on around us, but lighten up and have some fun with
it.
Wells currently lives and works in San Diego, California. She was born and
raised in the Pacific Northwest where she received classical art training,
including an apprenticeship under her father producing Byzantine-style mosaics.
However, inspired by Wayne Thiebaud, Takashi Murakami, Hannah Wilke and Nikki de
Saint Phalle, Wells’ work became more playful and combined graphic design,
sculpture and her classical training in mosaics with a lot of color, seduction
and humor, and like Pop artists, she exploits familiar cultural icons,
repetition of forms and serially produced objects. Her work is shown and
collected internationally in numerous public and private
collections.
David Richard Contemporary is located in downtown Santa Fe north of the historic
plaza. The gallery offers a range of important contemporary art with an emphasis
on abstraction in a variety of media by established and emerging American and
international contemporary artists, as well as historically significant works
from the 1960s through the
1980s.
