The
mount in First story - The Mount of Forgetfulness refers
to
Mokattam, a large hill to the east of Cairo. It is from here
that
Rawi (Arabic for “storyteller”) sees that stories are
in
danger of dying out and decides to rescue them from oblivion.
In
Hala Elkoussy’s film, the stories come to life—a
continuous
montage that itself adds another myth to this folk tradition,
with
its symbolism, poetry, memories, accompanying music and
numerous
historical
references.

Being
the sites of informational display and construction of a
common
national identity that they are, museums have preserved an
essence
that transcends space and time.
This
essence remains despite changing mechanisms of engagement;
from
being small cabinets of curiosities stuffed with various
oddities,
museums have grown to become large spaces with multi-lingual
audio
guidance equipment and touch screens. They are still meant
to
produce narratives, generate curiosities and open
up
questions.
When
“agriculture” was first positioned into a museum context,
it
was a moment of victory, where the economic activity and
thriving
culture around it became markers of modernity.
But
the value of agriculture has extensively changed today,
alongside
museums that encapsulate its practices. With
industrialization
occupying national anxieties and quests for new
modernities,
agricultural practices took a step back, became the site of
rural
peripheries, of country-side backwardness and of a temporal
past
that needs to be replaced by the modern. On a par stream,
the
agricultural museum has grown to index that past of
bygone
national pride; an outgoing moment that doesn’t speak to
the
present.
Artist
Asunción Molinos departs from this moment to propose
an
alternative look at the current agricultural condition, which,
for
her, is crucial to understanding how our very contemporary
world
operates.
In
her installation, Untitled 3 (WAM) World Museum of
Agriculture,
she uses the legacy of the museum to raise curiosity around
the
contemporary process of food production and its cultural
impact,
by creating a pseudo-old cabinet of wonders.
Inspired
by the aesthetics of the Agriculture Museum of Cairo,
and
inhabiting an old Downtown Cairo flat, the space will be
presented
as a “social arena” where contesting discourses on
food
sovereignty, food security and the use of biotechnology will be
on
display. Their positions, myths, truths, opinions and data
will
collide in a portrait, a phantasmagorical spectrum of this
thing,
once called
“agri-culture”.

Rotterdam-based
photographer, Bas Princen produced a photographic survey
of
critical sites of urban change in five cities: Istanbul,
Beirut,
Amman, Cairo, and Dubai. Internationally known for his subtle
yet
accurate photographs of urban conditions all around the
world,
Princen constructs his images meticulously as a way of
urban/
architectural research, and reaches an image that is at
once
poetic and highly informative. With the help of local
guidance
from institutional partners in the region Princen
constructs
intimate portraits of the five cities. The photographic
exhibition
took part of the Rotterdam Biennale, and then proceeds to
tour
across the region as a separate exhibition.
Bas
Princen
(*1975) is an architect and photographer of public spaces based

The Practice of Orienteering
A
Panel
Discussion
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
A term loaded
with
symbolic currency, and yet one that outright rejects that which
it
seems to conjure, "Orienteering" refers to a game
in
land navigation in which players seek out a set of
superficially
imposed markers, called "control points," that have
been
planted by course officials throughout an otherwise
unpredictable
and unchartable territory. Originating in late 19th century
Sweden
as a a form of military training, Orienteering has since
developed
many different variations; it's most recent (and perhaps
most
unexpected) adaptation: a model for artistic practices.
Operating
much like "orienteers," how can artists and
curators
working within the Middle East and its diasporas address
the
"control points" they are persistently faced with—
be
they institutional or market pressures, reductive ascriptions
of
time, place, identity and sensibility, or misused, overused,
and
abused discourses and terminology such as Orientalism,
diaspora,
cultural hybridity, the local, and the
"glocal"—without
somehow inevitably reproducing and reinforcing them? How might
the
anti-narrative and ambulatory structuring principle suggested
by
the sport of Orienteering offer a strategy for artists
and
curators to work within the inevitable formulaic framing
devices
so often imposed upon them, while simultaneously managing
to
escape their trap?
Ranya Husami (curator), Annabel
Daou
(artist), Sarah Rifky (curator) and Mahmoud Khaled (artist),
will
comment on and discuss these questions in a panel moderated
by
Deborah Deacon Odette from the Arab American National Museum.
The
panel, held on Saturday 11th December 2010, 7PM at the
Townhouse
Gallery, is a preface to the American presentation at the
12th
International Cairo Biennial opening on 12th December 2010.
The
event will be in English, Arabic translation will be provided.
