Art News:

Jane Upshur
Dear Artsnews,

First, allow me to wish you an art-filled holiday season.  I encourage you to create something you've made and give the gift of yourself rather than contribute to the corporate behemoth that has become the Borge, controling every aspect of our lives.  I bought some little square canvases that the kids are going to paint and give aways as gifts of love.  Below also are some inspiring books to get the juices flowing.  Above all, I hope you focus on bringing joy and creativity to yourself and the world around you which is hungry to receive it.
Above is a close-up of my recent portrait of Dr. Jane Upshur.  To quote the kind words from my dear friend Jan: "A great southern lady with assertiveness and yet she allows her gentle soul to show through...Well done, Rob!"  I think the greatest compliment an artist can receive is to know that his intentions have been realized.

Here are two great books that I wish I'd written that I highly recommend as Holiday gifts to any art spirit on you list:  Stop solving problems and putting out fires and become the creative force in your life.  "Path of Least Resistance" unlocks the secret to being a successful creative being, in whatever discipline you have chosen.

As far as a basic approach to understanding how the mind plays tricks on us to keep us from our perceptions, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" is the answer.  I use a lot of her techniques in my own teaching.

Confusion around edges inhibits the eye's ability to navigate through the work. Too many hard edges in the wrong places stop the eye cold.

Nice to look at but it's verging more on the decorative rather

than the artistic. Don't let the work become too "techniquey."

Very sellable but is it an extraordinary work of art?

Technically, lacks the sense of form and light, time of day. You

establish these as goals for the work but do not realize them in the paint.

Where is the extraordinary reason for being?

The lack of color harmony leads to being too literal with

colors.

Are the flowers in the same universe as the background?

Don't let the skill of execution fall behind the quality of the idea.

As a color field it is very seductive.

A lack of skill takes us out of the universe of the picture. Too

much skill can do it just as easily.

Don't express just for expression's sake. Instead express a love

of form or materials. Find a structure you can be passionate

about.

Don't let the composition be too predictable.

Good drawings almost always possess a variety of line quality

(variable thicknesses).

Let's not be too literal with color, i.e. orange tree, white birch.

What are you saying about a sunset that hasn't been said before?

What are you saying about atmosphere, temperature, feeling

of water?

An unimportant shape seems to have found its way to the

dynamic focal point. Who's driving this car?

The frame is taking away. Available frames are not always the

best frames.

Clarify your vision. In what universe does this scene exist?

That's a lovely rendering of flowers, but what would elevate

this to the level of fine art?
