Rossini: La Cenerentola [Cinderella]
(17 December)
Friday 17 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. – with supper interval.
La Cenerentola is Rossini's take on the Cinderella story – no fairy godmother or magic tricks, but ugly sisters, a charming prince and bracelets rather than glass slippers to help the dénouement! Appropriately enough, Rossini began work on the opera on Christmas Day 1816 and, if not as well known as The Barber of Seville, it is in no way inferior – and this is a marvellous performance with Cecilia Bartoli in the title role. The production is a traditional one with evocative sets and delightful costumes whilst it's hard to imagine the music being better done.

DRAMA, THEATRE & SPOKEN WORD

Apokalupsis @ Theatre in the Park (to 18 December)
Featuring: Brezhnev Guveya, Tatenda Mangosho, Peace Mukwara, Florence Mhungu, Rumbidzai Karize and Chipo Phiri.
Written by: Blessing Hungwe; Directed by: Patrick Tembo; Produced by: Daves Guzha.
Apokalupsis literally means final catastrophe, the end of time, and the beginning of a new dawn ...  But in this case is change an unachievable fantasy failing to exist amongst mortals???
The play, Apokalupsis, is an explosive, humorous and well-crafted political satire set in pre-colonial Africa but imaginatively engages with the socio-political and economic developments of the day. The year is 1802; the reigning king of an ancient African kingdom is caught in the vortex of inevitable change.
Natural and supernatural forces in the form of droughts, pestilence, and uprisings from his family members prove that the king's once prosperous land is under siege. Faced with a powerful opposition whose strength stems from the people's support, the king finally gives in and agrees to share power hoping to end the crisis. This however proves not to be the end but the beginning of the real drama.
A striking tale that finds its relevance in Africa heralding the present power struggles, nepotism, greed, women empowerment, and tribalism.
The play will run from to 18 December at 5.30pm and 7.30pm everyday except for Sundays & Mondays and is the last play of the season. Tickets are US$3 & US$2. Venue: Theatre in the Park (Near National Art Gallery)

She is irresistibly drawn to a hunky senior servant, a footman called Jean, who is particularly well-travelled, well-mannered and  well-read. CLUBS & SOCIETIES

Association of Complementary Health Practitioners (14 December, 12 January)

14 December
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 14 December, at 6.30 for 7.00 pm. at Highlands Sports Club.
Our talk will be as follows:
In 2007, Rosie Mitchell and Sarah-Joan Nott set off on an incredible adventure into the unknown - to an enormous island off the east coast of Africa, home to over 250 000 species of flora and fauna - Madagascar.  Of those, 150 000 are found nowhere else on earth!  And despite the ravages of mankind's careless agricultural practices, which in 2000 years have destroyed more than 90% of the forests which were the precious habitats in which most of these fascinating species live, many of these extraordinary endangered creatures stubbornly continue to hold on by a thread.  Come and meet some of these, especially the enchanting lemurs, when Rosie gives her illustrated talk on this exciting trip to a strange and wondrous land, and hear about the history of this amazing country, and the reasons for both concern and also hope, about the future of these rare flora and fauna.
Our talk will be followed by a bring and share supper and the bar will be open, all are asked to bring a contribution towards the supper. A small donation will be requested at the door to cover the hire of the hall etc. All are welcome.

12 January
Our talk and supper for January will be held on 12 January, at Highlands Sports Club at 6.30 pm for 7 pm.
Our speaker will be Bridget Pringle Wood, who will tell us about the very interesting and fairly new Light Therapy she uses, which has had very positive results with the people who have been treated. She will demonstrate the machine which is bio-stimulative and  encourages the body to do the healing without the need for medication. Bridget will talk about the many conditions for which it can be used, and says it is a simple concept, which will speak for itself. I am sure everyone will find it a worthwhile subject to learn about, and to utilise when needed.
Everyone is welcome. There is a small donation requested at the door, to cover the expenses of hiring the hall etc, and everyone who attends is asked to bring a donation towards the supper, a simple plate of anything tasty, buffet style. The bar will be open for drinks.
