FILMS
Four Cinematic Views of Venice: Death in Venice Thursday, December 16, 7:30pm Luchino Visconti's visually stunning adaptation of the Thomas Mann novella follows a composer who goes to Venice to escape past loves and professional failures. In conjunction with La Serenissima: Eighteenth-Century Venetian Art from North American Collections, the film program presented one film each month of the exhibition that features Venice as a historic, romantic, and cinematic setting. This is the last one. Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo Friday & Saturday, December 17 & 18, 5:30pm; Sunday, December 19, 2pm From 1940 - 2008, the Oklahoma State Penitentiary held an annual "Prison Rodeo." Part Wild West show and part spectacle; it was one of the last of its kind - a relic of the American penal system. Prisoners compete on wild-broncs and bucking bulls, risking lifelong injuries. In 2006, female inmates were allowed to participate for the first time. Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo goes behind prison walls to follow convict cowgirls on their journey to the 2007 Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo. Director: Bradley Beesley 2009 USA 90min. NR digital HD. Official website. Copresented by deadCENTER Film Festival Brutal Beauty: Tales of the Rose City Rollers Friday & Saturday, December 17 & 18, 8pm Roller derby is an American contact sport that has seen a nationwide revival in recent years including in Oklahoma City. Brutal Beauty: Tales of The Rose City Rollers tells the story of Portland, Oregon's league, the Rose City Rollers. For more than a year and a half, an embedded film crew documented the thrills and spills of derby life. Through unlimited access to team bouts, practices, and the private lives of the players, Brutal Beauty puts the viewer on the inside track to this high-contact, and sometimes dangerous, sport. In their own words, the Rose City Rollers tell how roller derby saved their souls and kicked their @$$. Director: Chip Mabry 2010 USA 80min. NR digital HD.
