Photographer puts camera to good use, gives back

From gun threats at Hulk Hogan’s wedding to the Britney Spears umbrella incident, many photographers seem to step out from behind the camera unfavorably. One photographer, however, is focusing her talents on a different subject: giving back.

Internationally known fashion and travel photographer Latana recently released Barely Exposed, a book of photos that capture 17-21 year-olds in their transition from youth to adulthood. Her mission? To prove the importance of this misrepresented age group to better understand how they see the world and themselves – and to help parents better understand what they’re going through.

“As a mother of a child that was soon approaching the passage from adolescence to adulthood, I wanted to capture that moment in his life with all the questions and fears that the future held for him – and also for me, as a parent,” says Latana. “I realized other parents had to be going through this, too. Through Barely Exposed, I hope to help bridge that gap for all of us.”

In addition to travel photography in India, Southeast Asia, China, Armenia, Siberia and Africa, Latana’s work has appeared in magazines such as Harper’s, Vogue and Details. She has two other books, as well: Fragments, a conceptual work of images of an abandoned villa in the heart of Tuscany, and The Phukthar Monastery, a project conceived primarily for the benefit of the children and monks of the monastery.
