Again, Lélia concentrates on the exploration of variation within a single subject, achievable only through a series of repetitions, each one finely yet distinctly different from the preceding canvas. Lélia feels intimately and deeply drawn to this subject which figures so significantly in her childhood makeup as an image embodying security, happiness, family life with her grandfather Paulémile, community solidarity, as well as an assured and comforting sense of solitude within the snowy landscape. The Colours of Silence: The Book Lélia Pissarro’s career, life and philosophy in images and texts is now available at £40 + £10 worldwide postage and packing The exhibition is accompanied by a 216 page book, The Colours of Silence, a comprehensive review of Lélia’s Pissarro’s oeuvre to date, going back to the first painting she sold at the age of four. In addition to her figurative works, it includes a series of fanciful shoes, subtle compositions in transparent colour washes, and vibrant abstract paintings.
