On January 7, 2011, the David Weinberg Gallery will host its last opening. The show, entitled The Collective,
will be a salon style exhibition featuring 21 of our beloved artists.
This final exhibit is an opportunity for the gallery to support our
artists and display some of their finest works for the last time. Over
the course of four and a half years we have been blessed to be a part of
the arts community in Chicago and this show acts as a thank-you to all
those who made it possible.
Please join us on Friday, January 7 from 5-8pm to
help us celebrate our history. Half of the artists in the show are
local Chicago artists, all of whom plan on being present. Furthermore,
several of our out of town artists have made plans to be present as
well. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and greet our unique group
of artists as well as our knowledgeable staff. At the opening we
encourage you to introduce yourself or ask for an introduction. As a
final opportunity to purchase works from the gallery, we believe that
getting the chance to speak with the artists and discuss their work with
them directly is a unique pleasure that most collectors agree adds
critical value to the work.
In many ways, the closing of this
gallery is heartbreaking. We pioneered an education program that was
unheard of in the for-profit gallery world. We were able to stand in a
crowded room on an opening night with Maya Lin
and discuss her works with Ann Hamilton and Lucy Lippard. We were able
to shake hands with, and then accidentally spill the beers in the hands
of Mike and Doug Starn. We hosted the first gallery show for Richard Hunt in Chicago in over decade. Judy Pfaff
hadn't ever had a gallery show in Chicago before her solo here early in
2010. We hosted collaborative efforts with Lawrence Weschler and the
Chicago Humanities Festival; with Chap Kusimba and the Field Museum; the
Marwen Foundation and the Chicago Botanic gardens, to name a few. We
nearly broke our backs installing Jordan Eagles'
work. We suffered bouts of illness during art fairs. We took the most
harrowing boat ride we ever hope to take in the darkest of nights across
unknown waters in Southwest Florida with one of our artists. We worked
with wonderful museums and private collectors to find the very best
works for acquisition. We had dinners and drinks and laughs that will
never be forgotten. We've seen our artists and our own families grow.
There are too many memories to list and it's hard to say goodbye.
The gallery will also host a closing reception on the final day of the show, Friday, February 18, 2010 from 5-8 pm.
For one last time, help us celebrate what we've accomplished in this
very short and very difficult time. We value your support and we hope to
see you soon.
