On the 21st December 2010 at 6 pm the Civic Museum of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Italy, will open a new section of contemporary art dedicated to “Mithra, sol invictus”. The artworks by Setyo Mardiyantoro and Vincenzo Montella have been selected to be included in this collection.
The great importance of the mitraica religion and the numerous analogies with the Christianity have pushed the cultural center the Pillar, with the collaboration of the Soprintendenza for the archaeological Assets of Salerno, Benevento, Avellino and Caserta and of the Municipality of Saint Maria Capua Vetere, center of an exceptional Mitreo, to organize a double event: a convention of study and resigns of art dedicated to the God Mithra.
It resigns is uniform in these mediums - painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and design.
The fundamental characteristic is that all the works, a cinquantina, have been realized exclusively for this resign and has which subject the solar Mitreo and cults.
Other detail is that the pictorial works have all the same dimension: 70x100 and those in ceramics 40x50. Wide freedom has been granted, instead, for the other disciplines. All the works will be collections in a catalogue, published from the Municipality of Saint Maria Capua Vetere with appropriate ceremony and cancellation mails them. Timetable of visit. It is premised that the Mitreo di Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Ancient Capua) came to the light in 1922 in the course of the intense activities for the digging of a sink. Datable at the end of II the century d.C., it constitutes one of the greater examples to the world of the rare mitraici sanctuaries with pictorial decoration.
The more evocative element of the Mitreo is, in fact, the large one fresco placed on the wall of bottom with the figuration of the God Mitra that, aiming ginocchio the left at the rump of the Taurus white man, with the left hand seizes the snout of the animal in order to immobilize it and with the dagger in it hits it to the right to the throat.
The cult of the God Mitra gets lost in the night of the times, but century a.C from Zoroastro came rielaborato and organized in the WAYS.
After its spread in India, Persia and in Syria, arrived in all the Middle East; in the II sec. a.C already it was known in Egypt and in the sec. it was a strong truth in Cilicia, native land of Paul, and from extended here on all the territory of the roman empire.
