MAD MAD

New York, NY (December 17, 2010) In partnership with the National Dance Institute (NDI), the Museum of Arts and Design will present a Dance Workshop led by the Institute's master teacher Bianca Johnson and the master musician/percussionist Roderick Jackson, along with NDI Celebration Team dancers, as part of the program for Family Day on Saturday, January 15, 2011. This spirited workshop will be followed by a performance of "The Drum Speaks," choreographed by Johnson and Júlio T. Leitão in the MAD Theater.

Founded in 1976 by Jacques d'Amboise—the renowned classical dancer and choreographer and a former principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, NDI is a model program that exposes and educates thousands of New York public school children to the magic and discipline of dance through award-winning arts and learning programs. Mr. d'Amboise established the National Dance Institute in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate individuals towards excellence.

Also on the Family Day program is a selection of films showcased in kidsfilmfest, The Brooklyn Film Festival's annual summer program, providing wonderful animated shorts for families and children to view. The films include: "ART," featuring music and narration by Grammy Award-winning artist Bobby McFerrin, about a young boy who loves to draw; "Roberto the Insect Architect," about a termite who wants to be an architect; "Tin Can Heart," about a robotic puppy's friendship with an android visitor; and "La Lune," about a young couple's adventures living in a magical tree.

In addition, families and children will have a chance to create their own art in a Hands-on Art-making Workshop led by MAD's Artist Educators. They may also visit The Global Africa Project, the critically acclaimed exhibition, which demonstrates the impact of African visual culture on contemporary art, craft, and design worldwide through work ranging from jewelry and fashion to furniture and architecture to painting, photography, and craft.

Family Day offers countless opportunities for children to create, learn, and explore. MAD's Galleries, Open Studios, Theater and Workshops are the perfect place to spend a day discovering art, meeting artists, watching films, and being creative. With breathtaking views of Central Park that inspire children and adults alike, the Museum runs a wonderful array of educational programs for all ages with unique Intergenerational Workshops, film screenings, and opportunities to meet MAD's Open Studio Artists.
