Art News:

Letter from Naomi Cass CCP Director 2010
Amongst the myriad of email Christmas cards and leaked diplomatic dispatches circulating the globe, here lies a short message from CCP summing up a fabulous year and thanking Members and supporters.

LOOKING
From the irrepressible Kodak Salon, to Mark Feary’s two inspired curated exhibitions, Autumn Masterpieces and Event Horizon, through to the highly acclaimed exhibition by Taryn Simon, presented in conjunction with the Melbourne International Arts Festival, CCP presented a breathtaking range of approaches to photo-media this year. Exhibitions wove between established and emerging artists, solo and curated exhibitions both on site in Fitzroy and at the Melbourne Art Fair. From record attendance at the Taryn Simon and Art Fair exhibitions, photo-media remains relevant, challenging and unpredictable. CCP exhibitions currently being enjoyed by audiences across Australia are the Seventh CCP Documentary Photography Award and Simryn Gill: Inland. A full list of exhibiting artist can be found at http://www.ccp.org.au

LISTENING AND LEARNING
A fulsome year of conversations took place with international and local speakers, including voices from a broad range of disciplines. From artist floor talks and individual lectures though to two lecture series and a book launch, several events were held in conjunction with partners the University of Melbourne and Monash University. Programs were presented throughout the year for schools and youth at risk, including an online education kit produced for Taryn Simon’s exhibition and a fieldtrip for teachers to inner city art spaces. Les Walkling presented a bumper year of workshops to full houses, while Boris Eldagsen and Matthew Stanton also presented successful programs.

READING
With generous support from the Besen Family Foundation, exhibition catalogues were produced for Robyn Fox, Hanna Tai and Event Horizon. Catalogues were also produced for Richard Grigg and Shane Hulbert.

MEMBERS
Special events were enjoyed by Members with the At Home with Photography evening; a tour of Up Close at Heide Museum of Modern Art with exhibition curator Natalie King, and an exclusive tour of photography at the Melbourne Art Fair with Naomi Cass and Mark Feary.

THANKING
Artists enable CCP to exist and volunteers, CCP Board, CCP Members, donors and sponsors enable CCP to thrive. I extend our gratitude, whether giving of your time, expertise, brute strength or hard earned cash, CCP is indebted to your contributions.

May I acknowledge a year of comings and goings, commencing with Mark Feary, who made a magnificent contribution to CCP’s exhibition program. The position of CCP Curator is now shared between Karra Rees who returns from maternity leave, and Kyla McFarlane who we are delighted to welcome as Associate Curator. We thank Sarah Fransella, Development Manager who departed in November to begin a family and I am also delighted to welcome Christina Apostolidis our new Front of House Manager, replacing Shay Minster who left to work at Manningham Gallery and embark upon her own business. In April Mellissa Bedford joined CCP to develop and present fabulous programs for schools, at CCP, online and at schools.

A major acknowledgement goes to Simryn Gill for generous donation of her glorious image as the 2010 Limited Edition Print.

2011
I hope to welcome you to our first round of exhibitions and launch of CCP’s new Billboard project, a City of Yarra initiative in partnership with 7-Eleven, on Thursday 3 February, 2011.

Lastly, I thank you for your interest in CCP and look forward to your continuing engagement.

Here's to a splendid year for photography in 2011.
