"Night News" - an occasional
missive from the darkness
Vol.12 No.3 |

"Fortunately,
art is a community effort - a small but select community living in a spiritualized
world, endeavoring to interpret the wars and the solitudes of the flesh." -
Allen Ginsberg |

Here are a few items to put a lid on the year 2010:
Night Work by a number of the "usual suspects" can be viewed at
San Francisco City Hall (Ground Level) thru January 14, 2011. The exhibit,
Night/Light: Bay Area Photographers Take Aim After Dark, was juried
by our own Tim Baskerville, along with Aimee Le Duc, Gallery Manager, San
Francisco Arts Commission Gallery; and Thom Sempere, Executive Director,
PhotoAlliance. Tim produced a thoughtful perspective on Bay area Night Photography
with his published statement
for the show. BTW, those local luminaries, whose name you'll no doubt recognize
are as follows:
Linda Fitch, Andy Frazer, Lenny Greenwald, Mark Jaremko, Shawn Peterson, Greta
& Manu Schnetzler, and Lena Tsakami.

Our latest online exhibit,
The Nocturnes: 20/Ten is now
live! This show introduces a little diferent format than seen in our previous
biennials, in that the final selections by the Jurors was limited to Twenty
pieces by Ten artists - "Twenty/Ten." Why not have a look, or two - and let
us know what you think, by leaving a comment on our Blog.

Registrations are now
being accepted for the Night Photography course, taught by Tim at the College
of Marin, Kentfield campus, starting February 4, 2011. This is a seven-week
course, and a perfect followup for those Nocturnists who have taken one or
more workshops with The Nocturnes, in which one can 'stretch' out a bit -
it's also good as an introduction to the topic of Night Photography (NPy).
All the details are here.
At this time we
would to ennounce some NEW Course offerings
- at the San
Francisco Photo Center in the recently remodeled Harvey Milk Arts Center.
Three different courses start on January 6, 2011 (So Hurry!) - a History of
Night Photography (Jan 6), an Introduction to Night Photography, and an Advanced
Night Photography. We are also working on an exhibit of student work from
the Advanced Course to be held at the Center in 2011. Look for more new of
event held at this exciting new venue in 2011! BTW, Tim currently has work
from two series on display in the grand room of the Photo Center - five images
from the Mare Island Nocturnes, and five from the Dream Date
series!

NightNews FLASH!
(Yeah, we're
on the 24/7 news cycle!)
We just received this message today from Michael Yochum: "Hope some/all
of The Nocturnes will submit to FOTO juried exhibition at ARC Gallery.
Love / own many of your works!
AND THIS
- Just in!
"FOTO submission has been extended until Jan 7th (although it
shows a 12/31 deadline). So if you can let all know that they actually have
until the 7th that would be awesome."

For
Alumni only - we would like to give a "heads-up" about our 21st AlumNight
event (now twice-yearly again), to you, our illustrious Alumni. As usual, this
is partly a benefit for the Mare Island Historical Park Foundation, co-sponsored
by The Nocturnes Night Photography Web site, and held at locations on
Mare Island. Scheduled for February 26, 2011 - check your Inbox or The Nocturnes
site in the next few weeks for all the nocturnal details.

Finally,
we want you to give you advance notice of a number of events to be held in 2011
- the 20th Anniversary of the founding of The
Nocturnes! We kick off the year-long festivities in January, with a
private dinner, held on Mare Island, honoring legendary Night Photographer/Educator
Steve Harper - some of the "usual suspects" will be doing some serious
planning for the rest of the year, so stay tuned! In-the-works are dual, East/Left
Coast exhibits of Alumni NPy, monthly full moon gatherings of the faithful (which
is where it all started, really), field trips, programs involving some of the
many early supporters of The Nocturnes Web site, and a few surprises!
Events already slated in 2011 include a number of co-op programs conducted with
Lance Keimig of TheNightSkye.com
(more details to follow) at Mojave desert and Eastern Sierra locations. Continue
to check BOTH Web sites for details.
