dear designboom reader,
different cultures have their own calendars. we begin the new year, actually
the second decade of the new millennium. it will be a chinese rabbit year
(3rd february 2011 to the 22nd january 2012), meanwhile the new jewish year 5772
starts on september 28. hindu new year falls on april 14 and iranian nowruz occurs
on march 21. the current islamic year is 1432 AH, 7 december 2010 to 26 november 2011.

on our modern gregorian calendar, the mathematical reality is not as sexy
as what we are experiencing : most people would likely measure 2010 as the
beginning of a new decade on the premise of cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3, 4 ...),
also because we refer to decades as the 60s, 70s, and 80s etc.
instead, the fact that the calendar year is an ordinal number
(1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) suggests that the year we are in is not completed until
the end. generally speaking, calendar counting starts with year one. the years went
from two B.C., to one B.C., and then we started counting from one A.D. to two A.D.
there was never a year zero and that is the main issue that made 00:00:01 on
january 1, 2011 the start of the new decade.
we wish you a happy new year!

carrying over, we would like you to take note of designboom's competition
FUJITSU DESIGN AWARD
also, we are accepting registration for our designboom mart in stockholm,
being held from february 8th - 12th, 2011.

thanks for reading us
birgit
