Winkleman Gallery is very pleased to present Binocular, our first solo
exhibition by New York artist Leslie Thornton. Widely known as one of the
most influential experimental filmmakers, Thornton presents here a mesmerizing
new vision including single-channel videos and a suite of nine gorgeous prints.
Each of the videos in
Binocular pushes past the more rarefied "sublime" in nature with a
desire to bring to surface what has been suppressed and outcast. The contraries
of beauty and ugliness, like good and evil, come together in a renewed meeting
and clash of
opposites.
Modular in form, like much of Thornton's media work. (she was the first media
artist to produce a serial, episodic work "Peggy and Fred in Hell" in 12
episodes over 25 years), the Binocular series uses HD video of different
animals, shot by Thornton over the last
year.
