MORE INFORMATION: Inside-Out / Matisse Drawing with Scissors, late works
1950-1954
At the beginning of 2011 the Jamaica Street Artists (JSA Bristol) mount
a takeover of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA Bristol), alongside a
separate exhibition of the master of colour and drawing,
Matisse.
The RWA, a gallery established in the nineteenth century, is teaming up with
JSA, the new young bloods in town, to showcase Bristol’s explosive studio
movement and highlight JSA’s prominent position in the city’s art
scene, in
Inside-Out.
Encompassing the vibrancy and diversity of the studio, the exhibition showcases
a number of emerging and established artists and former members who have gone on
to achieve international
success.
Inside-Out promises a fresh approach in the vein of the RWA’s
past experimentation with the 2009 exhibition Crimes of Passion, but
more importantly in the words of JSA spokesperson Andrew Hood: “It creates
an opportunity for both organisations to reach new audiences. For the RWA to
work with a studio group is a real first with the potential to create a very
exciting partnership and collaboration. For JSA taking the studio out of its
traditional environment and exhibiting as a group allows the artists to see
their work in a completely different setting and creates the freedom to
experiment in a new
context.”
Also taking place during January is an exhibition of the French painter,
sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954), one of the twentieth
century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for
their extraordinary richness and luminosity of
colour.
Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Touring exhibition from the
Southbank Centre, features thirty-five lithographic prints of the famous
cut-outs, produced in the last four years of his life, when the artist was
confined to his bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such as The
Snail and the Blue
Nudes.
Matisse continued creating highly original works into his eighties. For his
cut-outs he used paper hand-painted with gouache, laid down in abstract or
figurative patterns: ‘the paper cut-out allows me to draw in the colour
… Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside
it…I draw straight into the colour’. The colours he used were so
strong that he was advised by his doctor to wear dark
glasses.
Inside-Out runs from 8 January 2011 to 8 February 2011 and Matisse
Drawing with Scissors, late works 1950-1954 runs from 8 January 2011 to 6
February 2011 at Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, open seven days a week.
Associated events include exhibition tours, painting and printmaking workshops
and lectures. For more details call 0117 973 5129 or visit www.rwa.org.uk.

Threads of History: The World of the Bayeux
Tapestry
Saturday 29 January 11am-12.15pm. Coffee and refreshments
10.15am
Rupert Willoughby is a prize-winning historian who specialises in
the domestic and social life of the past. A graduate with First Class
honours in History from the University of London, he is author of the
best-selling ‘Life in Medieval England’ and of guides to castles
owned by English Heritage, also a series of popular village
histories.
Commissioned by the Bishop of Bayeux who fought at Hastings, and
executed by skilled English craftsmen, the Bayeux Tapestry is the last survivor
of a vanished art form. In this illustrated talk Rupert will present a
lively introduction to the tapestry – so much more than just the story of
Hastings – in which he unravels some of its mysteries and places it in the
context of its
age.

The RWA has seven galleries within the 19thcentury building. The five
upstairs galleries – Sharples, Winterstoke, Stancomb-Wills, Methuen and
Milner - host the main exhibition/s. Artists can apply to hire the downstairs
New Gallery for their own exhibitions (which forms the New Gallery programme).
In the basement are the RWA Friends’ Room (with occasional Friends’
exhibitions), and also the newly refurbished Fedden Gallery which often exhibits
some pieces from the RWA’s permanent collection and is available to hire
as a conference and meeting space. All gallery spaces are available for private
hire for special events, such as weddings and parties. If members of the media
would like a tour, please contact Louisa as
above.
RWA also hires out pieces from its permanent collection as part of the
‘Art in Your Workplace’ scheme, see www.rwa.org.uk/workfrm.htm.
The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is one of only five Royal academies of
art in the UK. It is a registered charity which has been self-supporting for
over 150 years and possesses an outstanding Grade II* listed building, galleries
and permanent fine art collection. The RWA has HM Queen Elizabeth II as its
patron. The RWA is an established venue for the fine arts and embraces an
artistic awareness of the widest nature. The exhibition programme provides a
showcase for one-person and mixed exhibitions in a variety of media, which
attract large numbers of visitors nation-wide. The Academy is situated in the
academic heart of Bristol at the Clifton Triangle, where Queens Road meets
Whiteladies Road, next to Habitat and opposite the Victoria Rooms.
