Happy
New Year!!!!
The
Annex Galleries will be participating in a number of Fine Print and art fairs
in the next few months and thought that a note, with a couple of enclosures
would be the best and most effective way of notifying our clients and mailing
list. First is a show we have put together at the
gallery:
“Mauricio Lasansky and Other Recent
Acquisitions.” This includes a remarkable collection of Lasansky’s early,
rare works from Argentina, before coming to the U.S. and teaching at Iowa. A number of these are the only known
examples from the small editions.
The rest
of the gallery is devoted to exhibiting a number of interesting recent
acquisitions including: an early Blanche Lazzell white-line color
woodcut, a number of new Gustave Baumann color woodcuts and a
rare white-line woodcut by Northern California artist Cora Boone. We are exhibiting color woodcuts by W.S.
Rice, Chiura Obata, Hiroshi Yoshida, Anders Aldrin, Frances Gearhart and
Jessie
Arms Botke.
In
addition to the woodcuts are a couple of wonderful, early gouaches by Robert
McChesney; a rare ink drawing by June Wayne, done using a “flit
gun.” There is also a crayon
drawing by the great Mexican artist, Rufino Tamayo – 2 slices of
watermelon, one of his signature themes.
We are also showing a drawing of a clarinetist by Wisconsin artist Don
Anderson, titled “Practice,”
which is illustrated in J. Schniller ‘s 1961 book Art / Search and Self
Discovery as well as a large, Modernist abstract ink drawing with hand
coloring from 1952 by Kenneth Nack.
We also
have a remarkable pair of 3 panel art deco mural/screens done by Esther Bruton in Taos, New Mexico in
1929.
Returning
to prints – there are intaglios by Stanley William Hayter and one of
his students, Louise Nevelson and a rare, delicate etching of three figures,
done in 1922 by Pablo Picasso.
There
are also works by: Sam Francis, Percy
Gray, Ian Hugo, Deborah Remington, Aaron Siskind, Sam Tchakalian, Adja Yunkers
and others.
To those
who have been to the gallery or our website you know that this is a small
fraction of the works on paper at the gallery; we encourage those who might
want to look beyond the walls to do so.
