Sarah Hobbs: Out of Mind Opens January 25th
at the Silver Eye Center for Photography

Neuroses, phobias and obsessions visualized in large-scale color photographs

PITTSBURGH, Pa., 1/4/10 - The Silver Eye Center for Photography is pleased to present
Sarah Hobbs: Out of Mind, an exhibition by Atlanta-based artist Sarah Hobbs, which opens on January 25, 2011 and will be on view through March 12, 2011. The opening reception takes place on Friday, January 28th, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Silver Eye galleries on Pittsburgh's South Side, 1015 East Carson Street, Pittsburgh, 15203. Admission is free.

Sometimes, there is only a slight degree of difference between what constitutes normal and abnormal behavior. Sarah Hobbs explores this psychologically charged terrain in Out of Mind, which features fifteen images she produced between 2000 and 2009. Each of these works focuses on some phobic, obsessive or neurotic tendency such as overcompensation, hoarding or denial, which find their visual correlative in the meticulously crafted tableaux Hobbs stages expressly for the camera. By turns discomfiting and familiar, empathetic and humorous, almost everybody can relate to the complex emotional states the photographs represent. "Everything always comes back to the viewer," Hobbs says. "The psychological issue is presented in the photograph, but it's up to the viewer to contend with the space in their own mind and bring their own psychological make up to it."
